Put Up or Shut Up 2013 - Defense Edition

It's hard to pinpoint one player who really needs to step their game up to stay on this team, but here's my attempt at a ranking.
1. Harper: I think Vaccaros draft selections was a "Hey Harper, Im looking at you" moment from Payton. While he may be uncuttable this year, I have no doubt if he doesn't step up tremendously this year, he's a goner. IMO he needs to not only get back to average, but really shine. Even then I think his clock his ticking with Vaccaro destined to take snaps.
2. Will Smith: Besides underachieving the past few seasons, the move to the 34 signals Smiths way out. Their obviously giving the respected Vet his chance at DE this year in the 34, but with young promising guys like Hicks who you can't keep off the field and guys like Tom Johnson or Tyrunn Walker who can produce some snaps for a fraction of the cost.
3A. Malcolm Jenkins: I honestly have no idea what happened to this guy. He showed tons of promise in 09 and 10. He was alright in 2011 but the guy looked completely lost the majority of 2012. I think he has the talent to be a contributor, he just needs to put it together. I would honestly have no problem putting IAQ in over him on a regular basis, considering Quddus actually produced when Jenkins went out towards the end of last year. I don't think he's on the hot seat as much as Harper, but if he doesn't start getting it together, he could be replaced pretty easily.
3B. Jon Vilma: He and Jenkins are in a similar situation to me, but with less pressure on Vilma. IMO Lofton and Hawthorne are the two guys you expect to be big time contributors at ILB with Vilma still seeing the field. I think he's already just about on his last year or two of being able to stay on the field, and after taking a paycut, he is still a valuable situational piece with tons of experience and leadership.
4. Patrick Robinson: I think Robinson is still a valuable piece to this defense, but he really needs to get it together after a horrid 2012. Hopefully the scheme change will allow him to get back to that potential we saw down the stretch of 2011. I don't think he's on his way out and hopefully with Lewis taking one of the top CB spots, he won't have to be spotlighted as often. I think this year and next are very important for him in determining whether they think he can step up to the 1 or 2 spot when Greer moves on/retires.
5. Broderick Bunkley: This isn't so much about him being on the hotseat as much as wondering what his fit will be going forward. I don't recall how old he is, but IMO Jenkins is the future at NT. Hell, he may be the present. I think Bunkley provides value as your incumbent starter and no matter who wins the battle, hell on the field quite a bit in 2013. I think he'll be a Saint for at least a couple more years regardless but with mentions of Walker seeing time at NT, you have to wonder how if three will be company with Jenkins, Bunkley, and Walker.

NT. He's got the strenght to hold up to double teams in the middle IMO. He has always been a run stuffer type DT. I think him and Jenkins will do well rotating in the middle.

Jon Vilma:
I'm interested to see how he fits in a 3-4. He wanted out of NY because they switched to a 3-4 under our current DC's brother. Should be interesting. I don't think his body has many more snaps left in him. More of a veteran presence situational player IMO.

I know we've all debating this a hundred times, but I kind of want to see what Wilson can do at ILB. Lofton being the thumper and Wilson being a little quicker. Let Butler and Gallett play OLB majority of the time.

Will Smith is the new Fred Thomas. Decent player. Not as bad as we make him out to be, but past his prime.

I blame 2012 Jenkins on Spags. He was never that bad before. I think Spags asked too much of him and he wasn't ready for it yet. He's got some talent, and he plays hard. I just think he needs to be used correctly. I'd like to see Jenkins playing more nickle/rover like he did in 2009.

I agree that safety is the most interesting position to watch in camp this year. Jenkins and Harper in the new scheme may be better (or worse), very intriguing.
If we had just a tiny bit of pass rush the entire secondary would be less-vilified.
Junior Galette has a put-up or shut-up year coming up as well, we've heard about his potential for multiple years now... his transition to OLB will be interesting to see with him standing up more.
A decent pass rush would help ease the pressure on so many aspects of the defense.

I'm definitely on this bandwagon. I hope he does, having Butler, Wilson, and Galette on the field on passing downs would be pretty awesome. We haven't had that much speed on the field in a long time.
However, I think that's something more that this board sort of came up with than any of us have really heard or seen the coaches talk about it. Wilson did play some middle last season, but IIRC, it was almost always just to blitz the middle of the line.

Nice post. Agree with just about all of that. I will add one player that I think CSP will be on more than any other player on offence to up their game and that is Mark Ingram.

I feel like Hawthorne will break out this year. He was my favorite offseason grab last year. Hopefully he plays inside with Lofton.

CSP loves Ingram, he'll see to it that Mark gets a fair share this year.

He played ILB in the 3-4 in college. I think that's where most on here got that from. Then he was moved to OLB then to DE and now to who knows where...
Galette has done well when he's had his chances. He even covered some guys out of the backfield at the end of the season last year.

1. Harper
He played really well in 10' (minus the playoffs) and has fallen off since then. Coverage has never been his strength, but I'm not sure if teams looked at the Seattle film and said "Hell, I knew he sucked in coverage, but damn, he really does suck in coverage."
What I'm tired of is having glaring weaknesses in our coverage. I'm not sure what to do with him. What tips your hand more than having Harper on the field?
quote:
2. Will Smith
Eff this dude. He's been robbing us for years. Nothing pisses me off more than him kissing his bicep after some other guy pushed a QB into him. Oh yeah Will, you a bad man.
quote:
3A. Malcolm Jenkins
He needs to play on a smaller field. I think he can do well as a nickel back and slot blitzer.
quote:
3B. Jon Vilma
If he can fully heal, I think he has at least 1 or 2 years of production left in him. Considering the amount of sub packages we'll be playing, having his smarts and coverage skills will help out a lot.
quote:
4. Patrick Robinson
Played really well the last half of 11, and then fell apart last year in the zone scheme. We'll see. This scheme will fit his abilities, but getting his confidence back will be important.
quote:
Broderick Bunkley
I think he could play some nose and 3 tech. He was really under used last year. Weird.

Rex Ryan was in Baltimore when Vilma was in NY.

He had 2 decent first years, a Meh 3rd year and a subpar 4th year... The 4th year was a completely different system that failed to produce pass rush with the front guys quite often.

I think Payton only "loves" one guy on this team and he's not Ingram.
Payton may not go with the running back by committee this year and Ingram will get his chance to prove what he has. If he doesn't produce early, PT takes the load and color Ingram gone at the end of the year.

Totally Agree
Is it just me or does it seem like PT hardly played at all last year. Stats say he got a 105 carries last year, but I'll be damned if I can remember one of them.

We tend to not remember 3.5 yard runs much.

Damn it
I meant PT. I edited. Wish I could blame it on drinking.
