Sounds like you're only listing things he CAN'T(read: doesn't want) to do...

Does he have any project management experience/certifications?

OH, let me tell ya about the damn customized resume that he does for each job he applies for...I think it's a waste of time but anyway. He researches the company to learn about it and he tailors his resume to the job description b/c he has so much experience in different areas. No one wants to read through all the "stuff". Therefore, he isn't a pro or expert at any one thing but is competent at lots of things. That's why I think staying in his job so long has hurt him. And many on this thread are saying call managers and be aggressive but I challenge anyone to find TWO (direct) phone numbers to a hiring manager. There's not easy access to a manager out there, especially for a large company. And remember, he hasn't had to look for a job in 15 years (rusty?). He's done linkedin and all the other reputable sites. I'm not sure of his salary requirement but he definitely wants fair pay given his experience and education.

Thanks for your advice about the resume...

ETA: Do you have the names of the small companies that you reference in your post? That would help him when looking.

He has tons of projects in the hosptial that he has planned, implemented, and maintained (some over 2 facilities) but no certifications. He never needed them for his work. He just researched things on his own and did them. The state wasn't going to pay for that. Companies look for certs...he doesn't have them. =(

Having been through much of what you portray here, I just decided to start my own company.

Although with a degree he should be good to go, almost regardless of certifications. You only need certs if you want to be the programmer / admin guy and you've said that's not what he wants.

there are hundreds of small companies in BR/NOLA and between that have a small IT shop 3-8 people that need somebody to run them ...he could make 65-125k per year doing that... or he could just be some sort of sr systems admin...sounds like that is the type of work he likes... he needs to figure out EXACTLY what he wants to do, and for exactly which industy (or two) that he wants to work in ...then focus his entire effort on blitzing that avenue...

if he has a master's degree in CS, there should be no mention of cabling on his resume...sends the wrong msg

how many pages is his resume(s) ?

This could be very valuable. Being able to effectively manage a project while also being a leader on the technical side is very valuable. I'm not saying he's the one actually doing the grunt work but knows enough about the big picture to guide people to get stuff done. I've found I enjoy doing the big picture stuff over the detailed grunt work. Getting down and dirty with the code can be a good time if you're on an interesting project and you're allowed to do what you need to do though.

I found I had to leave LA to get a reasonable salary about 6 years ago. In LA it seemed like it was nothing but these risky start ups or government jobs which neither offered much in terms of compensation.

Check out a company called Sparkhound. I know several of the guys in the Houston office. They are very competitive in compensation in the Houston market at least. I'm not sure how they pay in Baton Rouge. They're based in Baton Rouge.

And get a LinkedIn account, connect with old colleagues and friends. Network!

I'm not sure. He has looked into get the certs but they are expensive and he really wasn't sure if he should invest in that at this point. In other words, would it really help him land a job, etc...

It depends on the job since he tailors it to each application process. He's had it as short as 1 page to as long as 3, not including references.

And why are references so obsolete? Jobs never ask for them.

because you could get sued for telling anybody anything....in IT, with only a few exceptions, his resume should never be more than 2 pages... I help people with their resumes and would be happy to look it over if you would like ....

A PMP or even CAPM cert would definitely help him. He needs to dress up his past experience as a project management role IMO.

Where is this for?

I have people try to contact me all the time about jobs. They are everywhere. And PLEASE PLEASE tell you husband to not call himself a "Computer Scientist" if he doesnt wish to program. Unless he is looking to develop complex algorithms or..... teach.

Otherwise he is an admin or just wants to be a manager.

This is how his resume should look.

When I changed my resume to this format and followed it's guidelines, my recruiting increased 200% and I never had to send out another resume to blackholes. Now they come to me.

LINK

Good luck.

Is he on linkedin? He should be.

Also not to be a dick but I don't really feel bad for people who complain about not being able to get a job but won't relocate. You have to go where the jobs are. Its very odd that he can't find a job though. Somethings not right. Is he a jackass?

That's what I call him! It's his "geek name". Love my geek!

He does teach and some of his courses are programming but they are really low level (I think) but yes, administrator/manager is likely where he would fit best. IMO, since I've worked with him before, he seems to do well with managing people. His courses have upwards of 100 students. Also, he's top notch at managing a budget. He worked in his family owned retail business from the time he was 12.

Yes to linkedin and he's been "verified" or whatever the hell that means (I just hear him talking). And I'm sorry but how fair is it to ask me to relocate when I have a very good job I'm happy with and established in? Not to mention our family... And it isn't the fact that he isn't getting a job, it's that he can't even get an INTERVIEW!

On the contrary...he's too nice if you ask me. He's not cocky yet he's very confident in his work. He does his due diligence in any project he's involved in...I'm not saying he's perfect and he likely needs to learn a few more things but he's willing to do so (even regarding certs). He just can't get an interview to present his qualifications in person.
