I agree. Most who are known as "cortisone guy" don't really follow up with PT

LSU alum and Eric thanks ...

It's acually a sports chiropratctor that I was seeing for it band issues who ordered the MRI as I didn't see the point in going to a new doc for that .. but if I need an ortho there is a great shoulder guy here in Lafayette.

He said tendonosis ... guess that's not good. Going back to PT on Monday for the hip -- will discuss with him then about the shoulder.

NO I don't want to be the injection lady or oxycontin lady BUT last night I sure as tempted to take the pain meds rx to me after the fall in September. It's way worse at night ...

You definitely have some issues that make me think certain diagnoses, however without an evaluation I can't say for sure.

Night pain is an indicative sign for a few things.

Don't worry though, The PT should know what they are doing.

re: Physical Therapists ... shoulder injury question

Yes I'm very comfortable working with him ... he sees the "athletes" that go through there .. they put me with him as I'm a "runner" although I think it's laughable to be considered an athlete. Not sure how big of a deal this is but he was an athlete in college and can at least understand my wanting to get back to running and functioning normally. He's a fellow (?) of the Gray Institute (not that he told me that but found while looking him up on the net). Is that a big deal?

The one thing that kind of bothers me is that the MRI was done without contrast -- and I've read that perhaps not all tears will show up unless contrast is used.

"inflammation of AC joing" "fluid in bursa" "strain" "tendonosis in RC" ... just sounds like one screwed up shoulder!

We'll see what happens. Thanks again.

definitely get the nerve block

This this this this. I had shoulder surgery 9 days ago for a torn labrum and partially torn rotator cuff. Nerve block sucks going in. But is SOOO nice on the other side. You don't realize how nice until it wears off.

I have 7 more weeks until it heals, then another month or so to get my strength back. I started having roughly 65% use within 5 days though. I'm at roughly 75% now, just no heavy lifting, no full rotationm and cant reach backwards.

This is true. My doc didn't find the partial tear in my rotator cuff till he went to fix the labrum.

Va what were your symptoms??? I can for the most part move it in all way functional ... washing hair, blowdrying, getting things off of "higher" shelves in cabinets.

Mine is like a deep nagging pain kind of like a toothache that you can't "get to" ... and when I sleep on that shoulder Oh dear Lord. Not good.

That. Tons of pain, at times, none at other, but full strength and rotation. Its usually caused by a labral tear. What happens is when its torn it causes the ball to slip out slightly and pinch parts of the shoulder. Usually the clavicle, causing bursitis. I could actually feel space in the shoulder when my ball would slip out slightly.

Don't fly, worst pain ever. Wanted to shoot myself after a flight of more than 45 minutes. Hoping this solves that.

Can you feel it almost in a direct line. Like you can take your finger trace the pain across your skin all the way around? That's how it was for me. I could pinpoint the exact line of where the deepest pain was. It went from my back in a straight line to the front of my shoulder.

re: Physical Therapists ... shoulder injury question

Sometimes it's across my the front of my shoulder ... deep deep. Other times it's ON the shoulder kinda in the "hole" that I can find (joint? idk this shit). There have been times when my arm on the outside below my shoulder to above my elbow was numb at times.

I'm just wondering about the damn contrast ... when I finally asked/gave in to the mri (they'd wanted to do it for a while now) I didn't even think to ask about the contrast.

I would lean toward there being a tear they missed. Even ones they see show up as insignificant. Its easy to miss a tear depending on what angle and contrast when they do the mri.

Va that's what I'm afraid of ... although I've read that not all tears require surgery. IDK ... guess I'll do what they tell me. Told them both they've got until 12/31/13 to fix me ... I don't want to start all over with a new ded next year!

re: Physical Therapists ... shoulder injury question

I had a shoulder problem a few years back. The orthopaedist told me that they treat tears and strains/sprains the same initially with physical therapy. It was so bad that I could not even pull a sheet up over me in bed with my right arm.

A little PT and a cordizone shot and I was fine.

Good luck, 91!

re: Physical Therapists ... shoulder injury question

IONA!!! I'm anti cortisone shots ... unless they start doing therapy that makes it hurt worse than it does THEN I'll consider it. I'm so wanting to have this shoulder/hip crap cleared up -- friends are going to DC for the Marine Corps Marathon and I'm no marathoner but the 10k is the same morning. THAT I can do!!! Maybe if I'm good by then.

Hope all is well wiht you!

I hear ya. But I have to say that I was having a hard time lifting my right arm to parallel with the ground. One shot I I raised my arm like a school kid trying to get the Nun's attention to answer a question.

If you and yours come to town let me know.

I hope you get relief soon!

ETA: Happy Mother's Day.
