Have ya'll seen the infomercials with the weedeater head that uses the individual stings? The one where they beat it up against a chain link fence and it doeesn't break. What is it called, where can I get it, and has anybody used it or something similar?

My weedeater is named Jose.

I wouldn't buy that as seen on tv weedeater head. Looks chintzy to me...

I have something similar. Got it from home depot. Mine uses the largest diameter string you can find I think. You cut several pieces about 10" and stick 2 at a time in the head. When they wear down you just slide a fresh one it.

This is close to what I have, except mine hold the string without it needing to be bent. LINK

Make sure you get one that will hold the largest diameter line you can find. I trim azaleas with it.

I'd hire me a Jose if I could justify it. My patriotism and cheapness wont allow for it though.

Looks like a POS to me.

GOOD wind up heads are amazing. I suggest just getting a good spool feed one.

Make absolutely sure it's one you don't have to take apart to spool up.

Thats the problem with the one that came stock, it takes an advanced degree in mechanical engineering to get line on this bastard.

With the good ones you just stab about 10' of line through it, wind it up, and go back to weed eating.

It takes about 30 seconds to spool them once you figure it out.

I tried one of these on my cheap Weedeater. It was easy t oload, but I had to put a new piece of line in constantly. Was very annoying.

Speed feed heads

When I was cutting grass we had ones like this. I don't remember if they were this exact brand or not but that's what they looked like. I personally liked them because you could put 900 feet of line in the bastard and they took no time at all to spool up, but for the kind you're talking about in the OP, something like this works very well and it's simple. You just have to pre-cut lines and keep them in your pocket for when they get short. They're also very easy to use. I'd suggest one of the two styles above. The echo brand head is really good. I think redmaxx makes a good speed feed head IIRC. It's been a little while.

The spools are much better. I hate having to stop to put in new line every couple of minutes

Ugly line is EXCELLENT and cheap. I highly suggest buying it. It performs wayyyyy out it's price bracket.

As far as the heads go, speed feed is the only way to go IMO. I'm rough as hell on weedeater string (read: completely reckless) and I don't like stopping to swap string pieces.

I haven't tried it, but a friend at work said he drilled holes in his old one and now only uses plastic electrical wire ties (zip ties) on his and he swears they out last every other line he has tried.

I like the way your friend thinks.

Same here. I used the individual pieces on my previous trimmer and it got annoying having to carry all the extra pieces of sting in my pocket. Got an Echo with the Speed Feed head and have loved it ever since.
