No expected time table for recovery, link coming

@SportsCenter: BREAKING: Phillies P Roy Halladay will have arthroscopic surgery to repair bone spur in right shoulder. No timetable for his return.

That sounds scary and, yes, it is serious. But there’s an optimistic angle to it all too: the labrum and rotator cuff issues are not serious. And he is going to have surgery to remove the bone spurs on which the rotator cuff kept rubbing, causing pain and irritation. Halladay says that if the doctors, once they get in there, find the same situation that presented itself on the MRI, he could come back this season.

Why is it always a month after struggling that news comes out a pitcher has bone spurs or is having pain in his shoulder?
Halladay knew when this season started he had pain

Maybe he thought he could pitch through it? Or he recently did something that aggravated the issue?

According to Fangraphs.com, players over the age of 35 that went on the DL for any sort of shoulder injury only averaged 59 innings over the course of the rest of their career.
Damn

Yeah, that article was pretty damning. The ones who came back and pitched a lot were Wakefield and El Duque.
Even Smoltz only threw 100 more innings and he was probably the only effective one from the list.

My point is pain is never mentioned throughout the process even though he knows it is going on, with position players it doesn't happen this way

He's done, I'm just sorry the Phils couldn't pull it together in October and get him a much deserved ring. It stinks seeing him in this rough of shape after not just two years ago he was one of the best in the game. The postseason no-no against the Reds will always be one of my favorite Phillies games I've ever watched.

This makes me wonder why pitchers wait until they feel pain to get MRI's. why don't they get an MRI maybe once a month or so to catch these things early?

Perhaps they dont want to show possible health issures or have a bad medical history which could affect future contracts.

Exactly, a few years ago there was a LSU pitcher having shoulder problems and came into my clinic for a MRI. Showed he had a couple of shoulder cyst, just a normal variance for pitchers. Someone mentioned that all pitchers at LSU should get one to establish a baseline. Advisors said no way, didnt want to give out any info that could hurt their future.
