Next-gen EA games will skip Wii U due to performance issues with Frostbite engin

EA's Frostbite 3 engine, which underpins many of the company's next generation titles, looks like it won't support Nintendo's Wii U. Johan Andersson, Technical Director of the Frostbite project at EA DICE, says the company tested Frostbite 2 on the console and found the results to be "not too promising," to the point where it "chose not to go down [the] path" of porting the next version. Leaked slides from earlier this year revealed that EA has approximately 15 games in development that use Frostbite 3, the implication being that Wii U gamers are going to miss out on some fairly big titles, including Battlefield 4, Star Wars, the next Mass Effect and, as Joystiq pointed out last week, this year's version of Madden NFL. It all adds up to a notable loss of support for the new console -- but hey, EA-style gaming was hardly a core part of the Nintendo experience in the first place.

Wii U isn't going to do anywhere near as well as the Wii did.
- No games.
- Higher price.
- Horrible marketing campaign.
- Rise of PS and Xbox motion systems.
I just don't see things playing out well for Nintendo this generation.

There also won't be a Tiger Woods 15. Tiger Woods 16 will be next gen.

Eventually Nintendo owners will have their own island.

Pretty sure their contracts will require some type of Madden and Star Wars to appear on every possible console.

Which I think it a violation of their contract with the NFL.
It's funny that they're trying to blame this on Nintendo for their engine not working on the platform while this seems to be an exclusively EA issue (and considering Crysis 3 was running on it, I find it hard to believe it's a performance issue).

Winner.
For all interested, this goes back to the Origin fiasco. EA required it to be used for Online EA Gaming with Nintendo. Nintendo said no, they have their own system and it would add a lot of problems.
WiiU obviously will lose out on support again, but it's not because it can't run the engine.

Maybe the last stages of this gen, but next gen games will have a hard time running on the WiiU.
It is simply not powerful enough.

Why the hell did I buy this system.
Nintendo needs to hurry up and give me some games so I can reassure myself.

Here's the thing. I will not buy a wiiU until Zelda is released. And that will probably be the only game I buy for it. So basically ill be paying 2-300 bucks to play one game

No, you'll be paying 300-400 bucks for 1 game. The basic is $299.99.

Judging by how much hate the Electronic Arts gets around here, if the Wii U were not to carry EA games I suppose that would greatly increase the quality of its library.
Posted on 5/8/13 at 5:53 pm to Tactical1
Definitely. But the problem with the Wii U is that it's library only has like 5 books.

Oh come on, it's more than that. Although most are ports.

A bit of an exaggeration, I know.

But Scruffy where will you get all of your sports gaming action?
