My dad's b'day is coming up. He's been an avid outdoorsman his whole life, but in the past 20, turkey hunting has become his true love. I always get him books for his b'day and xmas, because that's what he likes, and he has everything else.

Do any of you know of any good books about turkey hunting? Not "how to's" but short stories or something like that? I think he'd like something along those lines.

Take a look at Tenth Legion by Tom Kelly. I believe he's a Gump as well....

The best turkey book ever written was among the first, Henry Davis's "The American Wild Turkey" published in 1949. It's a great read because turkey numbers were very low at the time and hunting was entirely different. It will give you a greater appreciation for how awesome the turkey hunting is right now.

If you prefer stories then Tom Kelly is your man.

Tenth Legion is a classic...

Joe Hutto wrote "Illumination in the Flatwoods" about his experience raising a group of wild turkeys.

PBS made a movie out of the story.. Fantastic to watch..

so you're telling me it's just like it is now for me. I'd have better luck turkey hunting in Hawaii than I have in recent years in MS

They have Rios in Hawaii and in very good numbers. It's on my turkey hunting bucket list along with hunting the introduced wild turkeys in New Zealand.

I've heard a number of folks say that MS was very tough this year.

Did Hawaii about five years ago, it is THE turkey trip with the wife in my opinion. Killed three Rio's in four days and a couple of hogs. Only hunting trip that has been close is hunting ducks in Mexico for Valentine's day at an all inclusive resort. VERY happy wife on both trips!

Not turkey stories per say, but some good humurous outdoor related short stories are the books by Patrick McManus. He wrote the last page articles in Outdoor Life for several years.

Tenth Legion is the first option.

Just found out that a man I know is starting to Turkey Hunt. At the age of 78.

Pulled out my copy of that book to give to him.

This book is not really about turkey hunting but it takes place on a turkey hunt. The guy who wrote it is an executive for Mossy Oak. Pretty good book.
