The fact that they have LSU instate as 77k a year is laughable. I couldn't imagine spending that much at LSU in a year. Unless I was putting gold rims on my jetski.

Majoring in general studies isn't a sound investment?

Mind. fricking. Blown.

All instate students at LSU get TOPS, right?

That $77,000 is a bit much.

Even for 4 years that is extremely high. The majority of in-state students that go to LSU get tops. Even if they dont it still doesnt reach anywhere near 77k

it is stupid to lump an entire university/college into "worth it" and "not worth it" lists.
It all depends on what you do when you are there.
my engineering degree at LSU sure as hell was worth it.
especially since I got financial aid

My college was inside of the top 300, but outside of the top 150 and it was definitely worth the investment. Adding up all of my tuition for the 4 years I was there, I made about 3 times that in my first job out of college and had it all paid off within the first year of graduation. All of the people who get the useless degrees, spend tens of thousands (or more) to get them, then can't find a good job out of college are the ones who bring the averages down and make lists like this possible.

I don't doubt it was a great investment, but you gave up more than just the cost of tuition to get the degree. Your true payback was/will be longer than one year.

LSU is ranked 105 if you get financial aid (if I am interpreting it right). That is good. Click the column all the way to the right.

Auburn is #31 for ROI as a percentage of cost. Behind only Texas A&M in the SEC for instate with financial aid.

I think the admissions standards at LSU are higher than the requirements for TOPS.

So...if you are "in-state", you are getting TOPS. The exception being if you are from out of state but somehow get "in state" tuition.

That's why UNCs ROI is so terrible and it is a joke when 80% of the people who even went there talk shite about how great they are. It's basically a liberal arts school. Its a great school but the students major in stupid stuff. Unless someone goes to UNC for a graduate program, some of which are top programs in the country, I generally ignore any trash talking. I dont even think they have an engineering program.

It's sad that a former Sec of Education doesn't understand the purpose of higher education and education in general.

This comes as a surprise to people?

I always laugh at the people that go to small private schools, major in women's studies, and come out a few years later buried in student loan debt without a job. It is like they didn't see it coming and honestly expected that having a degree would magically get them money.

He found college is “worth it” if you get into a top tier university like Stanford, or study an in-demand field like nuclear engineering at even a lower tier school.

An engineering degree is almost always a worthwhile investment (assuming you are willing to work to get it).

Despite my huge LSU fandom, there is a reason I went to Auburn. It might not make a huge difference in the end, but Auburn is a better school and the engineering department just got a boat load of money.

It is really a damn strong ranking for AU and it takes out a lot of the subjective bull shite the US News and World Reports type studies throw in there.

This study is pretty simple and legit.

School costs "X" amount of money over 4 years. Average graduate salary is "Y" after graduation. Result, the average degree gives the average graduate a return of "Z" over their lifetime.
