Why did they leave the island?

only seen it once, but I think it was because it was a carnivorous island at night time and would have ended up killing pi and richard parker. Pi recognized this when he saw the meerkat decomposing in the water hole at night time and knew they had to leave

Definitely this. The water turned acidic at night and was carnivorous, evidenced by teh dead fish, the meerkat's running into the trees, and Pi finding the human tooth in one of the trees.
So he got what he could for he and Richard Parker to eat and GTFO of there.

The island is a metaphor for something. Something that makes a man stay in a seemjngly utopian place too long and become weak and eventually wither and die. Maybe it's a metaphor for marriage.

Marriage would be too specific.
Complacency is more like it.

yes the island would eventualy kill him, but I'm pretty sure the island was a metaphone for ...IDK maybe suicidal thoughts and giving up... I can't remember.

Clearly. I've wondered just WHAT a few times myself. I'm sure the fact that the island is shaped like a reclining human factors into it.

I don't see how it could mean anything other complacency.
He's on a journey to get to his new home in life and has left his family and his past. It's a journey that all of us take as we transition from adolescence into adulthood.
For many, they have goals in life that they are passionately trying to achieve. And also for many, they get to a point about halfway through and stop trying.
They find that not pursuing that advanced degree or musical career or job promotion or whatever it is they seek is easier than pursuing it. Much easier to work only those 8-9 hours a day for the boss and come home to the couch and watch TV. Much easier to go purchase a larger belt size than to exercise and feel good. Much easier to have apathetic relationships than ones filled with sentiments. Much easier to stop trying to better oneself and just accept however you are as being the best you can be.
And it kills you.
I think that's what the island represented.

crazy pic...
But yeah, I think the theme is being complacent and settling for less than you actually deserve, and how that can come back to bite you.

Whoa that pic does kind of give it away. Complacency must be it.
Guess that's a better answer than marriage.

I don't recall a picture in the book although I read it several years ago.
