re: Eating Healthy is Cheaper Than Not

My wife and I decided to budget $100 per week for groceries and allow ourselves to go out 1 time per week. We have found ourselves eating much healthier for about 1/3 the cost......and most of the food is organic/grass-fed/etc. where it counts. Mostly whole, fresh foods. Very doable.

I don't care. You are aware of roundup ready crops?

re: Eating Healthy is Cheaper Than Not

A few weeks ago i took a ride in an ambulance due to my blood sugar going nuts due to some surgery i had a while back. Doc said to get off the carbs and go to high protein low fat. First trip to the grocery store saved us money over other trips because we didn't by as much junk food to snack on. Our weekly bill went from around $80 to around $65, and the savings from not stopping to pick up dinner is adding even more money to the pocket.

What did you tell them to get?

Chicken, fish, lean sirloin. Lots of greens. A few varieties of dry beans. Brown rice. Peppers, onions, garden vegetables. Low sodium stocks. Fruit. Low-fat plain yogurt to take the place of cream and mayo. Eggs. Whole wheat pita bread.

My professional cooking background is mediterranean so that's the style I'm familiar with, but I'm researching some other preparation methods and recipes to replicate traditional southern dishes.

If you're looking for ways to do veggies in a way they'll like and that takes out the veggie taste, look into Asian styles.

I do both my brussel sprouts and my greens with rice vinegar and red pepper flakes and a few other things .. AMAZING.

Also.. tell them to roast veggies in the oven. Roasted veggies are 10x better than boiled or sauteed.

Is it true if you cook vegetables it takes out all the nutrition out of it?

Yeah. Every last bit of it. You end up just eating a small amount of fiber with no nutritional value.
