re: Eating Healthy is Cheaper Than Not

im a healthy eater and I know its not all that expensive, but cutting that much off of your weekly grocery bill seems like a lot. Unless of course they were just buying a lot of unnecessary items.

Well, if you are buying 3 or 4 boxes of sodas a week , chips, cookies, and ice cream. It's not that hard to shave off 40 or 50 bucks pretty quick. Other stuff is just more vegetables and less meat. Honestly, she bought a lot of stuff that were just snacks because they were always hungry.

I told her not to get it and tried to build a menu where they would feel full after eating and not want to constantly snack...so they saved by buying less, but not really losing nutrition.

thats what I figured

yea, then that price difference makes a lot of sense.

congrats on helping the folks feel better. I just did the same with mine. They had a grilled drum fillet , roasted potatoes, and steamed asparagus tonight. They are slowly catching on

I bought lettuce, grape tomatoes, mushrooms, a red onion, parmesan, and vinegar to make a salad and the total was $30.
This dude is full of shite.

1lb of top sirloin is a snack for me.

Brown rice, whole wheat pasta, frozen vegetables, and beans are all affordable and if you pay attention you can find good deals on meat. It would work even better for a family than for one person because you don't have to buy a big pack of chicken and hope you use it all up before it spoils.

Yep..See, i could care less if people call me a "cheapass" for eating like this. If I as a single college aged male in a shitty economy, can get by saving $75 or more a week by getting cheaper groceries and staying fit and healthy in the process, why not?

Agree for the most part but this:

Meat portion is cut down to 4-6 oz so a single chicken breast can easily feed two people.
is ridiculous for anyone who burns calories, well, ever.

especially if you cut your meat intake.

this little detail makes a huge difference, ground beef is cheap as hell but horrible for you

The key to eating well and saving money is portion control. One can make something last longer if they checked the serving size and stuck with it.

Sounds like you could have accomplished the same goal just by cutting this habit out, and it would have saved you the trouble of climbing up on that high horse.

Horrible for you? Maybe the high in fat kind, but the ones that are 96/4 (which you can get at target) aren't bad for you at all.

When I was in high school I ate nothing but complete crap food (and a ton of it) and was still in extremely good shape.

There is no way. That is insane

I get by for $150-$200/month and I eat extremely clean. Granted, I'm no longer trying for 3000+ calories like I used to. I've come to grips with the fact that I'll never be 185+, only lean

I guess. I used to run like 20-25 in HS and can't imagine how time consuming it is to do that shite. What mile pace?
