It's burst DPS. They're kinda a third wheel, but strong enough to take enough that you can do fine enough with just a healer at early levels.

I remember Dragoons filling a strange niche in XI as well. Won't stop me from playing one, though. There are always multiple jobs per character.

If your a lancer then I may go tank. I want a second option, just not sure yet. That way we can grind each other.

Just remember in a ff mmo it is one character and multiple jobs.

To switch classes, you just equip the weapon/tool for that class. You start at level 1.
To get different jobs, you have to complete the relevant quests for each one.
Job quests become available when you get a class to level 30, but you have to have another class at level 15 for each job.
Ex. Dragon requires Lancer 30/ Marauder 15.
