DAT -- 25 games into 2013 -- Random Thoughts (Lyles and Keuchel called up)

So what are your overall thoughts so far? We all knew how the season would play out and they'd be in the cellar for the season.
But is there anything positive you see out of the Astros? Are there new prospects in the farm system catching your eye? Anyone on the big league club doing better than you expected? Is there someone on the big league team now that shouldn't be there? (NB4every1).
In all, what are your overall thoughts so far this season?

Yes, I'm replying to my own thread.
-- I don't think they're as bad as people expected. The record doesn't show that because the starting pitching has completely let this team down.
-- The offense continues to be in the middle of MLB. That's a much better improvement from last year. But again, the starting pitching really cancels that out.
-- Brad Peacock needs to go the way of Brett Wallace.
-- I really like Dominguez. Wish he had a little more power, but he is what he is there. He's also 23 years old. He's doing better than alot of 23 year olds throughout baseball.
-- Joboo is what he is....hit a home run. Strikeout.
-- When will Cosart be called up? He cant be any worse.
I'm sure I'll have more random thoughts later.

The starting pitching has been worse than I thought. I didn't think Humber or Bedard were worth much and they have proven that and then some.
-Springer has started off well but his K's are astounding (32 in 91 AB's)
-I think we'll see Cosart by year's end
-Marwin and Cedeno have held down SS so far
-Just saw Lyles is being called up
I don't have much since I haven't been able to watch an inning other than the first game

I'm not going to complain about the hitting because we've shown the ability to put up big numbers in games. The thing they have absolutely got to work on is consistency.
Harrell has been outstanding, Norris and Humber are several notches below, and Bedard and Peacock can pack their bags for all I care. Hopefully Lyles will snap out of his funk, and Keuchel can return to last year's form.
That being said, our schizophrenic bullpen may be the worst in baseball. Is there one reliever on this team that actually has an out pitch?
Bottom line: being in the AL sucks. This is a team that would be around .500 if we were still in the NL.
ETA: Matty D is probably my favorite player on this team. The kid will be good.

I'm also starting to keep an eye on Nolan Fontana and Preston Tucker @ Lancaster. Two Florida kids.

It's pitching man.
IMO you can take everybody out of the rotation and bullpen with the exception of Harrell, and probably improve it.

Really interested in seeing Cosart up here. Should be soon.

He was terrible

There was a long stretch last season where Harrell and Keuchel were our only chances to win a game.

Looks like Jordan Lyles and Dallas Kuechel will get their turn in the bigs.
Hope one of them is somewhat competent.

quote:
The Astros are calling up Lyles in the hope he’ll remain in the rotation the remainder of this season. The organization believes Lyles made key improvements during his last two starts at Class AAA Oklahoma City. He’s attacking more with his fastball early in counts, is throwing on a downward plane, has shown better breaking pitches and has displayed improved pregame preparation.
“This guy has all the skillsets to be a front of the rotation starter in this league,” said Porter, prior to a Wednesday game against the Yankees at Yankee Stadium. “We’re hoping that is the case. We’re hoping the step he took back this spring has added motivation to never take it for granted and give everything that he has to not only be in the big leagues but to be an elite pitcher in the big leagues.”
Let's hope all of that's the case. His AAA numbers haven't exactly been stellar. Evidenced by this:
quote:
During a start last Tuesday against Albuquerque, Lyles allowed eight hits and 10 runs in just 2/3 of an inning.
