Salary negotiation question

Interviewed a couple weeks ago for a higher position within my current company (different division). Received a call from HR saying the hiring manager liked me and asked me to disclose my current salary. I told her that I did not feel it appropriate to talk salary unless an offer has been made. Did I make a colossal mistake? What would be the best way to handle it as I do not want to make waves within the company but I do not want them to low ball me based off my current salary as this would be a pretty big leap in responsibilities and position.

I'm sure the manager looking to hire you could get your current salary level from HR without much effort.

It seems like your answer would do exactly that.

Wouldn't HR know that and take it into account? It seems like you're starting things off in an adversarial way which might not bode well for you. You're expecting them to low ball you but don't know they actually would. Why not wait until they do to counter?

"You never make what you're worth. You only make what you negotiate."

If you're going to a new position in your company I wouldn't have had a problem telling them. They could get the information in a round-a-bout way anyways, and I don't think they'd low ball you just because of your current pay.

The divisions are completely separate and their HR does not have access to my divisions HR records. Every co-worker who has transferred disclosed their current pay and HR capped their raise when taking the new position even if the manager wanted to pay them more. I'm just leery of HR.

Happens with everyone that I've seen transfer since working here. It's screwed up but unless your hiring manager wants to fight HR on your behalf you get low balled. I've built a pretty good relationship with the hiring manager and think he would come through but you never know.

I think you did it right.
If they like you, they'll offer you. If not, then keep working hard and follow up. Make them hire you because of your work ethic and worth to company.

Odd that they didn't just look it up.
