Unforgiven - some brief sacrilegious thoughts

Caught a bit of this last night and something struck me. I thought Clint Eastwood was doing some pretty wooden acting. I'm particularly thinking about the part where he is telling Ned how much he's changed and how his wife straightened him out.
I can appreciate that he was supposed to be a laconic character and a seemingly a pretty simple man. But it almost seemed like he was just sitting there reading the lines. And I usually like Eastwood's acting.
Now, Gene Hackman was spot on. The part where he was disabusing the writer of naive notions regarding "The Duck" was pretty awesome.

I can one up your sacrilege. I don't like unforgiven.
too bleak with no likeable characters.

I think he was trying to show somehow that he was trying to convince himself of this.
Also; I'm not realy saying his acting was great there.

I guess we disagree.

Hence, why it is called an ANTI-Western

Yea, its far more realistic than anything else, and I think thats what I like about it.
Cowboys don't sqaure off at each other and give the other a chance.
Gun fights are no different toaday then they were back then.

Little Bill Daggett: Well, sir, you are a cowardly son of a bitch! You just shot an unarmed man!
Will Munny: Well, he should have armed himself if he's going to decorate his saloon with my friend.

BTW, nothing is sacred if discussed in a meaningful way on this board. Hell Freaux is like the Godfather around here and he doesn't even like the Godfather movie.

Never cared for it much either -- and I love westerns
That would be Dunces with Wolves

They could have made a movie just on Li'l Bill and his life before becoming Sheriff. He still sucked balls as a carpenter though.

It seems like you missed the point of the movie. Possibly the most loathesome character in the whole movie is the old saloon whore who ginned up all the trouble by brow beating the other woman into supporting the bounty revenge.

That's the theme of the movie. Why do you think it's titled "Unforgiven?"
Ask yourself a question: who in this movie is forgiven for his actions?
Little Bill? The whores? The cowboys? Ned? English Bob? Greely? The deputies? The Scofield Kid? Will Munny?
Will Munny is the avatar of their shame.
To Little Bill he is the violence that he despises and embraces all at once.
To the whores he is a hero who doesn't even want to touch them. Even when one offers her body to him for free, it's not good enough.
To English Bob, he is the real gunfighter to his greatly-enhanced vision of himself.
To Ned he is the the side of his past he can't wash over, despite his attempts to live right.
To the Scofield Kid, he is an old man who is more deadly than he is in his fantasies.
To the townspeople, he exposes their ghoulishness. They decorate a saloon with a corpse. After his violent retribution, they can't even look at him to shoot him in the back. They know he's right.
This film has layers, folks. Anyone who calls it "overrated" or "boring" needs to look deeper than the surface action.

I just love the feel of this movie.
When they are preparing to disarm English Bob, some of the deputies are laughing and cutting up, some of them are scared shitless.
English Bob lying to the writer, to build up his reputation as a gun fighter.
William Munny not being a good shot with a rifle or pistol, but he's fearless and a cold blooded killer despite that.
The writer tries to befriend Munny, as he did Little Bill. Crap about an experienced gun fighter will shoot the best shot first, but Munny doesn't entertain the idea. "I was lucky in the order, but I've always been lucky when it comes to kiilin folks."
The misfire, what other westerns do you get that in? And it would have probably been more common with the shotgun which probably used paper shells that can attract moisture.
