So I'm coming around to the idea. I know bullet penetration is critical. So what do I want? I have 16" .223 barrel with 1:9 twist. I absolutely can NOT penetrate walls.

AR is Home Offense, shotgun is defense imho. But do you have kids/anyone else living with you. You can get rounds that have less chance of penetrating but knowing about surroundings would help some.

Precisely...

Load it up with Varmint Rounds. Here's my opinion:

Swap that upper for a 458 Socom 8" and then you'll have a good HD AR.

You should be using a shotgun loaded with birdshot.

I am serious.

Anybody got any Youtube videos testing rifle and shotgun wall penetration?

You are actually wrong, again. 50 Beowulf does not come close to reaching full energy nor fps out of a 8" barrel. You need the full 16" to get it up and going.

The 458 Socom is a much faster developing round (much like the 300BLK) and only needs 8" to reach full capacity. Actually, its closer to 10" but much less than the required barrel of 50 Beowulf.

XD, I hopefully have my new billet lower in the mail to start my SBR. The state has held my suppressor paperwork for over 14 weeks at this point in time so no sense in getting in a rush about anything.

Check TNoutdoors9's channel on YouTube.

Oh and watch the video I posted. I don't have actual ballistics testing but I talk and stuff.

EDIT: Also check BrassFetcher.

Iraqveteran888 has such videos

Load your rifle with varmint or frangable rounds

Bad thing about shotguns pellets dont spread very much inside home defense ranges. Good thing about shotgun pellets dont spread much inside home defense ranges. Hitting someone at close ranges with 00 buck is near enough to hitting the same person with 10 9mm shots all at once.

Solution for home defense use the weapon that you feel most comfortable using under stress and add a light.

00 load in a shotgun won't make it thru drywall they say. AR is good if you need to take out the whole gang that breaks in

Any shotgun is going to perform like a giant rifle at super-close range (like inside your house). I'd think that birdshot would almost be like a slug at such close range.

5.56 with frangible rounds sounds safer to me. Maybe something like Barnes Varmint Grenades?

Try this one. Lots of videos cover wall penetration.

I certainly talk a lot and stuff. No denying it.

A shotgun will perform well with #7 or #8 at close range. The problem is, the perp may not be 5 inches from the tip of your barrel.

The problem with birdshot for HD is that you're depending on the person's PERCEPTION of pain to stop him/her. If you want to do REAL damage, you need something that will penetrate more than 5 inches.

It all goes back to design. What is birdshot designed to do? It's designed to penetrate minimally and knock small birds out of the air.

What is buckshot designed to do? Penetrate well and knock down a deer, which is a mammal. And oh yea, people are mammals too.

Here is my take on a shotgun for home defense. I do not advocate birdshot.

Birdshot for HD

And here is TNoutdoors9's test. He also thinks birdshot is not good for HD.

I completely agree with this though. One small perjectile traveling at over 3000fps is more than enough. And with a frangible/fragmenting round, you have much less chance of hurting someone/something you don't intend to shoot.

Here are a couple of videos from TNoutdoors9. He tests the Mil-spec open-tipped 5.56 rounds and the Hornady Vmax in 223. Both perform very well in penetrating enough and transferring ALL the energy from the shot into the TARGET, which is where it should be.
