I've heard this before. Does the teeth get caught up in the rope? Or is rope like a lure on the hook?

works on aligator gars... 2 rows of teeth... does not work as well on spotteds and longnose gars

Bowfishin is definitely the answer you're looking for.

We had a creek outside of Auburn we used to shoot suckers and carp in. There were some pools under the bridge that spotted gar held up in. We may or may not have shot them, depending on legality.

In a private pond, why not?

Ricochets are a bad idea anywhere IMO.

I would probably use a lightly loaded .38 or similar.

this is something i have never understood. it's legal to shoot a .22 at a squirrel, and no one ever gives a shite about that, even though the bullet can travel about 1.5 miles, depending on trajectory.

shoot near a lake and people think the bullets turn into heat seeking missiles.

Our ponds are ringed with houses, so won't be doing this.

after this thread sparked my curiosity, i did a little searching on the web to see about gar eradication.

Damn there are some stupid people out there. one a-hole recommended luring them in with chicken then scooping it up with a dipnet. He also recommended bringing an empty cup so you could fill up your ice chest with water to keep the fish alive.

Hwy 1, the bridge before the one at Elmer's Island road. Son & I saw him/her last Sept and it was gourging on white trout. Fishing yesterday saw again on same bridge. Looks like a submarine coming to the surface. Its head is about as big around as my thigh (I'm 6'1"/190) and looks to be 5+ ft. I would guess 100+.

I may or may not have speared them in the spillway under a bridge at night.

I have caught them with cotton rope. You tie it on with a worm weight above it and fray out the ends. They will strike it and get their teeth caught in the frayed rope.

ETA: I was watching Bizarre Foods and they were at the Seminole Indian reservation. The Indians were smoking the whole gar and i must admit it looked pretty damn good. Had some whole choupique on there as well. Anyone ever try this?

I saw that around some of the lighted piers last time I was out there at night. Makes you wonder if there are any bream and bass left.
