quote:

UCLA defensive back Marcus Rios will miss at least six months, and possibly the entire 2013 season, because of a fungus infection in his sinus area.

quote:

“It started as a sinus infection last October,” Rios said. “Then they found the fungus infection behind my eye and beneath my brain.”

Rios said that “it’s very rare. Only 12 people have ever had it and eight of them have died. Two others recovered and then died later.”

i assume the reporter meant due to complications with either the treatment, the infection coming back, etc

I find this interesting, so this fungus has directly related to over 80% fatalities in it's victims, and yet the author still begins it with, he is out for atleast six months. Dude's odds at life aren't the greatest right now, but the six month window is the first point. Alright than.

I didn't read the article but if it's this rare when was the last known case of the virus?

If it's 30+ years ago then medicine has come a long way and 6 months or the season but a full recovery could be logical.

Does it say that? Because most super rare infections happen in people with seriously compromised immune systems. This guy probably has a much better chance at survival than those statistics would suggest.

My mom had a fungal infection in her sinuses. She's still around and wasn't the subject of any medical journals, so I'm guessing she didn't have the same thing this guy has.

They went in and cleaned it all out and she's been fine since. Actually gets sick much less often now because her body is not constantly fighting the infection.

Good luck to this guy, hope he can make a full recovery.

Damn. Prayers sent.

By the way, the most deadly disease is rabies. Only 10 people in the history of time have survived it.
