Funny. I wonder why every insurance company and most medical journals suggest you get a second opinion. Could be because they know your first MD is using all his science to come up with his 'best guess'

You are confusing "science not having all the answers currently" with "science being wrong." You keep bringing up medicine, but theres so much about the human body and diseases we are still working to elucidate. So yes, a second opinion will never hurt when things aren't clear cut. Thats true in many arenas of life.

You know what you don't need a second opinion on? Whether you have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cystic fibrosis, anemia, etc because science has given us easy and reliable tests for these, and many other, conditions. So please, keep acting like all science is is a bunch of guesses.

Whats the book. Please enlighten us.

You do know the definitions of high BP and cholesterol have changed? I hope.

And? Regardless of the number cutoffs, you don't need a second opinion to tell you if you have it bc of these nifty little blood tests, sphygmomanometers, etc...

I think the point is that science has allowed us to quantify blood pressure, the "practice" of medicine uses that information to predict and treat disease. As our understanding (scientific knowledge) increases the treatments and perception of the data change with it (medical practice). It isn't always a linear progression, which leads some people to describe medicine as an art.

I dunno, that is how i always thought of it.

Precisely.

Science and climate predictions are hit and miss. I believe we are getting predicted outcomes based on what scientists know, but that doesn't mean it's going to be correct.

I'm also guessing we have better technology to monitor current weather which may make it more accurate than previous times. Some of our changes may not be as dramatic as we think.

And I was misdiagnosed with HBP when it was anxiety.

I was on BP meds for a few months and quit on my own.

That shite fricked with me bad, the meds, and when I quit, I felt normal.

So yeah, diagnosing HBP is not an exact science.

Totally. I think most people can accept the scientific method, it is the interpretation and extrapolations that get political and subjective.

When it comes to climate change, we have already seen many come off their doomsday prophecies. I have no doubt we are experiencing climate change, but I have some serious doubts as to the outcomes many are predicting.

I also question the severity of change in some cases. The data received decades ago isn't nearly as accurate or as widespread as the data we receive today.

I am also wary of the idea that the government has the answer to the problem.

This is also my position.

If every single time you see your PCP you have elevated BP (an objective finding, btw), usually there are one of three things that can be done next: 1) tell you to check your BP at home to see if you are suffering from the "white coat effect" 2) try to see if you have a Coarct or something curable that is leading to your primary HTN or 3) start treating your HTN so that you don't stay at increased risks for many terrible outcomes.

Don't confuse shotty work on the part of your PCP as an implication of the science or medical fields at large.

It's bogus. Climate always changes. That's what climate does. Man has no influence on it.

I had two anxiety attacks that caused me to go the the ER with BP of 160/120+ and high resting HR(120+) plus followed up visits to primary with 140/110+ BP readings.

I was on BP for about 6 months, changed meds 3 times, then just quit.

We didn't realize I had anxiety attacks, or anxiety till after we discussed my past. Dealing with a lot of stress for about 3 years and the crap happening close to those attacks finally figured it out.

Not so cut and dry.

Edit: My BP has always been around 128/88 range (5 point +/- range)

London just had the coldest March in thirty years.

Not that that means anything by itself - just fueling the fire

Like I said, thats shotty work by your PCP, for never getting a detailed enough history from you, or simply checking you ER intake records. Has nothing to do with the science or medical innovations regarding blood pressure measuring.

Those measurements have changed. See science is NOT exact.

Unfortunately this seems to be my experience most of the time. I've pretty much lost faith in doctors. I'm sure they would come in handy if I have some life threatening illness.
