Serious but rather dumb question, why did HBO pick "Game of Thrones" rather than

Calling the series "A Song of Ice and Fire"?
Seems weird to name the entire series after the first installment. Am I missing something?

I guess, but I'm nearing the end of GOT, the book, and it's pretty obvious why it's called ice and fire, I'm sure the imagery continues in the next book.
Same could be said about game of thrones I guess, bc I don't see people stopping the jockeying for position of the iron throne (the throne itself could literally kill you, and that's pretty badass)

They probably had no idea if the show would be a success or not.
Game of Thrones was the name of the first book in the series.
Made sense on many levels

It's a better name and a lot of movies and TV series, people usually call it by the first movie/book/etc. title. i.e. "Hunger Games"--when the sequel comes out in the fall, people are basically still going to call it "Hunger Games" instead of its formal book and movie name "Catching Fire."
Was probably easier/more simple to name the series "Game of Thrones", and I think it works better that way. The plot builds in the first season around the throne becoming eventually unoccupied, and then everyone starts fighting over it. It is a game in itself to win the Iron Throne, and is the main purpose of the books and TV show: who has the most rightful claim to the throne, and who can outdupe, outwit, outplay whoever to get titles, lands, etc. And it's not necessarily about being the wealthiest: look at Littlefinger and how he went from being not wealthy to Master of Coin to planning his next move to "win over" Lysa Arryn (mentioned in Season 3 Episode 3 at the small council meeting).

Besides marketing aspects, Game of Thrones kind of sets the tone for the whole series. The first 3-4 books deal with a series of characters jockeying to become king by playing different games or using different strategies. Hence they are playing a game of thrones. But honestly it just sounds better.

This was my assumption also. And expensive series to make that could have missed big time or hit big time. I am honestly more shocked that they haven't tried to work the other book titles into each season.

"Game of Thrones" makes me think of chess moves and knights and king killing and stuff. "A Song of Ice and Fire" sounds like a Lilith Fair documentary.

That is a great gif. But for some reason, only Coco and Prominetone are allowed animated avatars, and no one has an animated sig anymore, so expect to lose your sig privileges soon.

I might be making this up, but I think I remember it from a DVD commentary. They called it "Game of Thrones" so that they could separate it from the book series so changes could be made, at least that's what they said. They discussed "A Game of Thrones" vs "Game of Thrones."

Because then people would be expecting to hear a bunch of Earth Wind and Fire songs.
