My first back-listening project was Afghan Whigs. That one worked out really well for me. I didn't come away from the project thinking that Afghan Whigs were one of my favorite bands, but I added several songs to my top 1000 ever playlist (which doesn't yet have 1000 songs) and I now count "1965" as an all-around fantastic album.

My next back-listening project was Spoon. And oh dear god this was the best decision I ever made. Look, anytime I jump into a back-listening project, I already have a pretty good idea that I like the band, and this was definitely true with Spoon as I had already heard Transference in full and various other straggler singles. But I had no idea how amazingly awesome -- and crazy consistent -- Spoon's catalog really was. I now count Spoon as one of my favorite bands of all time.

Now I'm going in on Stars. The first Stars song I ever heard was the song "Krush"...and I loved it. I then heard "you ex-lover is dead", and loved that enough to listen to the entire Set Yourself On Fire album, which was fantastic. I've yet to hear a Stars song that I didn't like, but I've only listened to maybe 20% of the songs they've put out. But this is what back-listening projects are for. I'm gonna burn their first couple albums onto an mp3 cd, and listen to them in the car tomorrow while driving to my brother's house. I'll do the same on the way back, and then I'll report back.

Future back-listening projects:
Pixies
Steely Dan
Broken Social Scene
Metric

I do the same type of thing, and do it chronologically. One album per week. Last year I did Modest Mouse, because I missed out on a lot of their pre-Good News stuff, which just happens to be superior to Good News and everything after. They are now one of my favorite bands.

I've been thinking about doing the Flaming Lips, but I don't know if I really to try and get into their 80's acid punk stuff.

Broken Social Scene would be a good one for me to do.

I should add Modest Mouse to my list. I'm in the same boat with them as you were.

Good list, your trajectory makes me think that one of these would fit that flow: Frightened Rabbit, The National, and Elbow.

There is still a lot of stuff from the 90's that I intend to do this for as well:

Guided By Voices
Pavement
Dismemberment Plan
Cocteau Twins
Yo La Tengo
Sleater-Kinney
At the Drive-In

These are all bands I've heard one or two albums or songs at some point in my life, but never really gave them the full-discography treatment they probably deserve.

My oldest bro counts "At The Drive-In" as one of his all-time favorite bands. I've never listened to even a single album.

In my opinion, you can stop with Set Yourself On Fire with Stars. There are several more deserving bands mentioned in this thread.

I'm glad I didn't rely on your opinion. I think Stars is amazing.

Meursault... as a fellow red, I can help you out with a lot of good shite from the 90's that you MUST add to the list (you may find the GBV project very frustrating due to his proflific output and tendency to hit and miss)

One of the wildest shows that I saw at The Bayou... Those little Afro'ed frickers were literally playing guitar and running up the walls... It was fricking insane visually..

ATDI- Relationship of Command is a great album. just kicks so much arse. Sparta and Mars Volta (splinter groups after they broke up) never quite did it for me.

Agree w/ Seaward on the Pixies. Doolittle is one of those albums I remember exactly where I was the first time I heard it.

Pavement, National, MM are musts

Some others:

Replacements
Built to Spill
New Pornographers
Hold Steady

I listened to MLB when I was like 13. My oldest brother was huge into the Seattle sound.

This one is tough. I've listened to most of their stuff. But if you havent', it's gonna be tough. They have a lot of material.
