The Digi Q for overnight smokes. Unless, of course, you want to wake up periodically during the night to constantly check the temps!
I never wake up in the middle of the night to check temps on my WSM. The WSM is that good at holding temps. I find that once I have the dampers set properly and have a constant temp for an hour, that it can go for 10 hours straight and stay within 20 degrees. That is close enough for me.
Has a blower and a fan and probes for the ambient temp and internal food temp. You can set alarms for high or low on both. After a few years of in and out through the night, I opted for this and have slept well ever since! You will find the WSM a very useful cooking tool!

this. the Digi Q looks cool but i've never had a problem maintaining temp without one. use the minion method, and you can set and forget for long smokes.

+1 unless its exceptionally windy outside.

Y'all are right when you say that the WSM holds temp well, and the minion method is the only way to go. Having stated that I check the temp, not that the WSM can't hold the temp, I tend to worry about it even though its never let me down. I also like the tech aspect of the digiQ. OP was looking for recommendations, so I threw that one out there.

absolutely; he should know what his options are...and, although I don't use one, i'll admit the digiQ looks cool from a gadget standpoint.
For me - Kingsford, and 3 parts cherry and or apple wood - to 1 part pecan or hickory for milder smokes on pork, hickory or pecan on poultry, beef can be any combination. There is a long running debate as to whether or not wood needs to be added the entire time, but for me, I load it up in levels in the minion method. The interesting part is finding the flavor profile you like and going with it. The Jack Daniel barrel chips impart a nice flavor on ribs, as well.

I'm a huge tech nerd and I hated on my parents for always playing down smartphones (until they both got one ~4 years ago) and just old people for being tech-averse. Then I see the digiQ and I think oh that's pretty cool, but I like doing it old school. Feel like a hypocrite.

..i like gadgets as well but there is something very satisfying about getting the fire right, and keeping right, without relying on anything else.

make sure you get a Chimney starter and read the proper method to light it. I was lighting charcoal like a damn fool
alright, you have to share this story....how exactly where you using the chimney inappropriately? ...you can tell us...we are all friends here...
kfizzle- it's a neat gadget. They have a wifi version but that was way too much "tech control" even for me!
I don't use the digiQ for ribs, mostly for the longer than 12 hour smokes for brisket. For butts I can go with or without, depending on what other project I have going on at the same time.
Chimney starter for sure, and get the Weber brand. The knockoffs aren't as fast lighting in my experience.
Find a good rub, or create your own, and that goes for sauces, too.
