Here's a quick look at my hunt that I wrapped up this morning. I flew into Wichita, KS on Saturday and hunted outside the town of Great Bend. Tough hunting as the birds were henned up pretty bad. Did manage to harvest a good longbeard and goofed and took a full fanned jake. S@#$ happens but it was a hell of a fun hunt.

Gobbler #3 Rio Grande, 8 1/2" beard and 7/8" spurs..

Had 2" of snow overnight on Monday but I made the trip to Curtis, NE. Nebraska was stocked with Rio Grande and Merriam turkeys during the restoration. I managed to pull the Nebraska Slam and get both a Merriam, a Rio and a Merrio(Hybrid).

Gobbler #5 Rio Grande, 8 1/2" Beard and 1 1/8" spurs. A heavyweight at over 23 lbs.

Gobbler #6 Merrio Hybrid, 9" beard and 1 1/4" spurs.

Gobbler #7 Merriam, a triple bearded bird. Beards measuring 9", 6" and 5 1/2" and one inch spurs.

The Nebraska Slam, from left to right... Merriam, Hybrid, and Rio Grande.

Dry as hell right now and the late freeze has the farmers very worried. The local warden claimed the pheasant population is near record lows in that area.

Private land for both; however, a couple fellas staying at the same motel in NE did very well on public ground.

Apparently not, the guys were from MS and said they had the entire refuge to themselves.

There were turkeys all over public land in NW Kansas a couple of years ago. I have a few pics...

I was reading a lot and watching turkey hunting videos and it seems to be a consensus that Louisiana and Mississippi are the hardest states to kill a turkey because of hunting pressure. Do you agree with this?

pressure, lack of birds, and the terrain mostly

the midwest is full of birds, has wide open fields, but still gets lots of pressure

out west, full of birds, and some areas get a lot of pressure, but the areas are so vast you can get away from the crowds and find birds that have never heard an artificial call
