Warren Moon doesn't think the NFL draft assessment has changed much

Warren Moon wasn’t selected in the 1978 NFL draft and had to spend six years dominating the Canadian Football League before any NFL team would give him a chance to be the Hall of Fame quarterback he eventually became. It’s hard to view the NFL’s snubbing of Moon in the 70s and 80s as anything other than racism.
But while the NFL has made some progress on that front, Moon doesn’t think that progress has been sufficient: Moon told USA Today that he believes black quarterbacks are still held back by evaluators who view them unfairly.
Specifically, Moon noted that West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith was the subject of a scathing assessment that in Moon’s opinion crossed the line
“It sounds the same as two years ago,” Moon said. “It just shows that there are a lot of people in society who have the biases and stereotypes. And most of it is about your integrity or leadership or work ethic — all of these intangible things.”

Newton #1 overall
RG3 #2 overall
Geno Smith will likely be a top 10 pick
All in consecutive drafts. It certainly doesn't seem like teams are being very racist when it comes to QBs.

It seems to me he'd be better served addressing media members, as those seem to be the ones ripping into black QBs for being "athletes" and not "QBs."
These types of things were said about Cam, RGIII, Russell Wilson, now Geno.
Yet, 3 of those 4 are top 2 picks, 1 is likely top 10 and the other was just a gigantic whiff cause he's a 5'10 bad arse.

And apparently EJ Manuel is going to go top 20 according to rotoworld, which would be a big reach IMO, but kind of dispells any thing like that
Teams are smarter than that, they want the best QBs regardless of race they can find because once they find one QB, their jobs are safe for 10-15 years

What about the lack of white receivers or running backs?
The best player at the position will get the spot. Cam Newton and RG3 proves his theory wrong. Geno Smith will likely also be a top 10 pick.

I think being a white non QB skill position player (lets exclude slot WRs as well) would hinder your draft stock moreso that being a black QB would in todays NFL

because the same guy that made the scathing assessment of Geno made one about Cam. go after that guy, Warren.

I kinda see what he's talking about, but I think it's more incidental at this point.
Let's use two running backs as an example: Adrian Peterson and Jacob Hester. Peterson obviously busts his arse to play ball. We know this. But we don't need to prop up Peterson by praising his work ethic, because he's a freak athlete with insane running back skills, a miraculous ability to bounce back from injury and high statistical productivity. Hester is less athletic, less skilled, less durable and less productive. Hester gets praised for his "work ethic," "intangibles," "effort," etc. because media types always look to praise every player they cover and objectively Hester isn't as good as Peterson, so they pull from the subjective terms -- that, to be very clear, are still accurate descriptors -- so they have something good to say about him.
I don't think it has anything to do with race, unless someone wants to open up the can of worms and say black players are more athletic and skilled than white players. (I'm not going there.) It has everything to do with media types blindly trying to prop up everyone and having to dig to find things to prop up players who aren't in the top tiers in their respective positions. It just so happens that the top tier players at the skill positions have been black. It *could* have to do with race (reinforcing subconscious stereotypes or whatever), but I think the more likely explanation is that media types are overly complimentary and reach to the subjective stuff to prop up less productive players. Race is incidental.

Doug Williams was drafted in the first round of the same draft Moon came out. Maybe it was racism, that was certainly much worse back then. Maybe some teams just missed, that happens too.

I think the NFL is about as unracist as a professional, when it comes to players. The best players play, and if you don't produce you are out with the quickness. well except for the jets.

RGIII doesn't count, he's a cornball brother

Warren Moon bitching about racism means the draft is right around the corner
