So I will be going to give this a try in a few weeks out of Port O Connor. What weight rod would yall reccomend? What baits?
Also will be doing some rig fishing on the subsequent days and would love any advice yall could give.
I really have very limited experience in salt water.

10 weight. And throw some clouser minnow flies that mimic what they're feeding on. Use a sinking line (330 grain would work) and "strip" the line. If you get one hooked it will take all that line out of your hand for you and put you back on the reel. Hold on BP, you're gonna develop an addiction if you catch one.

ready for the addiction.
I have caught a few nice bass (up to 6 lbs) on my 9 weight and really enjoyed that. I am concerned that it will just not be enough for a nice Tarpon.

If memory serves Sushi has done tarpon with a fly, he will probably be around sooner or later...

A 100 pounder...no. But the much-more-likely 40 pounder....plenty. Be prepared to let it run, jump, etc. Just remember that when the jump, praise them by bowing. Sounds silly, but point your rod tip at them immediately when they start to dance.

^^^^this.
always bow to them when they jump..
I bet the first 20 threw the hook before somebody told me this..

we still need to hook up for a duck/pig/turkey/spearfishing trade at some point.

right on, let em run and just don't try to keep your rod tip up..

any tarpon on a fly....
everything else ... depends on the size of the tarpon and what they are feeding on.
richard whitner in Nola made me some tarpon flies with circle hooks that worked pretty good..

quote:Choupique said it right...Any tarpon on a fly is a fish that you'll remember. And don't go asking him for pics. You better bring a good hoist pic to the OB after you catch one.

I thought he was asking for pics of the fly

Yeah, I know. I'm just trying to get him to remember to post his hoist. Some of us that no longer live on the Gulf Coast have to live vicariously thru you frickers.
That's alright though....friday is salmon and dungeness day.
