I worked there for a stint when it was downtown, before it moved out east. Word is money issues. I like John Bragg but his track record is somewhat iffy. He's now the chef at fricking Sharkey's of all places, but according to some article in the Commercial Appeal he's trying to turn it around.

Central BBQ
Gus's Fried Chicken--- very legit.
Rendezvous BBQ--- I actually like it. May not be head and shoulders above the rest, but I definitely wouldn't miss it.
Those are the three tourist traps that I don't skip when I travel there for work. I'm never disappointed, I hope they treat you the same way.

I'll also recommend Rendezvous - a lot of the locals dislike it for the sole reason that it's a tourist trap. The ribs can be hit or miss but it's a cool place - and I see no reason to avoid a tourist place when you actually are a tourist. Can't go wrong with Central BBQ or Corky's either.
Hueys for a solid burger.

Get the lamb at Rendezvous ...best thing on the menu, IMHO .

Ernestine & Hazel's on South Main. Best burgers in town.

Wherever you go, make sure to try some Ghost River Golden Ale.

Central BBQ. Just eat there a bunch and you'll be good.

Restaurant Iris (NOLA native), Anthony and Michael's Italian Kitchen, and Hog and Hominy
Three awesome places. Andrew/Michael chefs were just named best new chefs by Food and Wine magazine. A/M is fine dining. Their more casual joint (which is incredible) is Hog & Hominy - it was just name one of the 12 most outstanding restaurants of 2013 by GQ magazine. These boys are on a roll.
As far as BBQ goes - it's already been said in here, but BBQ Shop and Central BBQ are the two go to spots these days.

Any idea if they have it at Memphis BBQ Co. in Horn Lake? Probably end up going there for a quick bite.
