Lenny Cooke Trailer
Man...These *Coulda been a contender* stuff really get to me. Thats just a trailer and obviously this will be a more "self destruction" documentary. But I'm looking forward to it.
At least JaMarcus made it to the pros and now is trying to get it together.
ETA: Here is actual video of Kobe, LeBron, Lenny Cooke at 2001 ABCD Camp
LeBron and Lenny
This is "Jesus Shuttleshworth" if he went down the wrong route and never made it...

Wowwww. I remember hearing about and reading about him in HS. My jaw hit the floor when I saw him present day.
I remember being in awe of the talent when I was in HS, so to seem him like he is today is shocking and saddening.

Yep. Its like his life was changed the moment he was destroyed by LeBron at the Adidas camp. Stopped going to school, thought he was guaranteed a shot at the pros...and it never happened.
Going into that game....LeBron vs. Lenny Cooke (at that time) would have been viewed like Andrew Wiggins vs. Jabari Parker.
Crazy how this stuff happens.

Telfair was actually sitting next to Cooke when he called out Kobe.
You could tell he was full of himself.

Yeah. I'm trying to find some of the old Slam! Magazine articles that were written about him. They were epic. Essentially, Scoop Jackson (who I think was the editor of the entire Mag at the time) and other popular Basketball writers essentially saying he was a man against boys, even though he never really played HS Ball. (Which, only 10-12 years ago, was rather unheard of.)
All in all, I think Lenny got bored with the game. He was too dominant, too early, and rarely had comp, even when playing in high profile tournaments. By his Junior year, he was pretty much into living the high life, and just let his game slide.
I'm going to look up a release date for this movie. It's a must see for me.

Early on, it's clear that the Safdies find their subject a lot more interesting than the game surrounding him. An opening montage shows off Cooke's early skills in a series off successful court maneuvers, while a title card explains that in his teen years he ranked higher than future NBA stars Amar'e Stoudemire, Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James, but the collage continues for a full two-and-a-half minutes, going beyond a demonstration of Cooke's abilities to show the barrage of hype surrounding him: interviews, autographs and victory dances define the buzz of his nascent career, establishing a startling contrast in the later scenes.
Having missed his opportunity to make the NBA draft several times over, Cooke's life spiraled downward to its current state, as he struggles to eke out a living in southern Virginia. Although hardly over 30, Cooke has already gone past his prime. A pudgy lower class family man looking back on his glory days, Cooke has been thoroughly abandoned by the system that offered him so much promise.

I think he was older than the normal high school player also. Look at how Carmelo looks in comparison to him. Melo looked like a kid (17-18) and Lenny was (19-20). Yet they come out of HS at the same time.
Whats even more crazy....Melo went to Syracuse, won the title, went top 3 in the draft the next year.. HOwever, if Lenny's grades were in order...he would have faced Melo in the Big East while playing at St. Johns.

I was just about to post that bottom picture, and have the picture above it be his ABCD Camp picture, and tell you that know way could you have told me in 10-12 years he would look like the bottom picture.
Ritt, on the film's website there are a couple really cool posters. One of all his recruiting letters, and another of a handwritten note from his mom, telling him he's doing the right thing in going for the NBA.
On phone, or else I would have posted them.

Wow I remember this dude and hasn't heard his name in years. Did he play at St. John's? I remember something about St. John's.

No. He declared for the draft out of HS but was unselected.

This is awesome that someone did something like this on him.
I know there was one on Kickstarter for Ronnie Fields that easily passed it's required goal, anyone know of progress on that one?

He had a cousin who went to St. Johns who was from New York. Name was spelled different though. PG Omar Cook.
Lenny committed to St. Johns...but never went. Instead went straight out of HS.

Of course. I just posted that since its a story of a guy whose life went in a downward spiral after so much promise and had a documentary about it. Just for people who enjoyed the recent JaMarcus piece I thought they might like this.
