I watched this last week and am a very big Lord of the Rings fan.

My view: Movie was alright.

I feel like the movie was made for a younger audience. There were a lot of corny jokes and simple humor.

It was made more like Harry Potter than Lord of the Rings.

Was not impressed, but will watch part II.

oh, you mean just like the book? yeah i guess that makes sense

ETA: Now that that's out of the way...

I thought it was a good start. The Smaug/Lonely Mountain scenes were great. the flashback Dwarf battle with the goblins was excellent. The troll scene was alright. Radagast was goofier than i expected. The council meeting did a good job of showing Saruman's tainted advice and Gandalf's fallibility. the last goblin battle annoyed me

Loved it but the production values from the OT were missing and keep it from being really great

I just thought it came off a little cartoonish.

More than I expected I guess.

it was IMO a perfect example of a "meh" movie

I liked it. I think people need to stop comparing it to Lord of the Rings though. Completely separate stories that share some of the same characters.

Enjoyed it a lot. Wish I could have seen it at 48fps to see what all the commotion (good and bad) was all about.

It was written by the same author and directed by the same person. Comparisons will happen.

I really liked the way they started it out with Bilbo and Frodo.

I think it sets up for a really good second movie.

Agreed. Overall I really liked the movie, but certain parts were just kinda bad for me. Like the dwarf dinner/cleanup scene. It was way too over the top for me. But I do understand why it was there though.

Other than that, there were a bit too many "Let's fall from hundreds (thousands?) of feet up and everything happen perfectly for us to survive this unsurvivable fall" moments. The worst was obviously when they were in that cave/mountain.

All in all though, I liked it a lot and look forward to the next one (two?).

you fell asleep during the Bilbo scene? because a few minutes later a giant dragon was dive-bombing a dwarven stronghold

I thought it was solid but not great. They should have made it into two movies rather than three. The movie really dragged at spots, particularly when they added material in.

That being said, they completely nailed certain parts like the meeting with Gollum, which was outstanding.

More of a 7/10 or 7.5/10 type movie.

I curious about the whole 48 fps commotion as well. Could anyone who saw comment on whether or not it was really a big deal.

As for my opinion of the movie, I enjoyed it. With the cgi and how some of the action sequences were choreographed, it came off as pretty cartoonish which I felt detracted from how epic and exciting the movie was. This may be appropriate though because book for the Hobbit definitely tends to be a lot lighter than LOTR trilogy.

I re read the Hobbit recently, and I kind of get the feeling like it is like a bed time story told by some type of grandfather figure. To stay true to the book, I feel like that is the type of atmosphere that should be conveyed. Kind of like the Princess Bride, I guess.

Was there one scene in the movie didn't have some sort of CGI? The story was good, the movie sucked.

I enjoyed it, but I felt that it had reached a natural conclusion about 30 minutes before the movie actually ended.

I really enjoyed the movie. The people that are saying its a lot lighter toned/cartoony are right, because that's how the book intended. I hate the harsh comparison to the LoTR but it's gonna happen.

With that said. I'm really looking forward to the Desolation of Smaug. I think it has a chance to be really good & one of the best out of all 6 movies.

The characters in The Hobbit are way more interesting than the characters in The Lord if the Rings, but I didn't find the movie illustrated that enough.

You obviously never read the books. It was written as a children's book. The movie is a lot darker as with the 2nd on which will be the movie of 2013.
