That's the exact problem. They were unsafe and very unreliable feeding. Imo, the 17 does not even belong in this discussion. It's 300BLK and 308 for rifles (308 just because of the sheer number of them) and 40 Cal and 44 mag for pistols with pistols taking a narrow lead.

Been posting from phone all morning and will till tonight so please overlook minor mistakes.

Are you insinuating that is a bad thing?

Another small fact that just happens to be in favor of the 300BLK, the bullet of the year last year was a Barnes 30 cal bullet. You are now asking yourselves, what the hell does that matter? Well, the bullet, while a 30 cal, was designed specifically for the 300BLK and to expand within its specialized energy and FPS range.

Idk man.

I'd like to see some graphs of ammo sales over the lifespan of these various calibers.

I'd bet you'd see some mind blowing numbers with the .17

The .300 not so much

You may be onto something. Many many many 300BLK shooters have taken to reloading to fill the void of ammo on shelves. Impossible to measure with the commonality of 30cal bullets and 5.56 brass.

And finally, truth be told, I am using ease of conversion into my formula of popularity. It's easy for an AR maker to hammer a new barrel and stamp the lower different and call it a redesigned rifle.

How can you say this, I know more people that own 17's than have even heard of a 300whatchacallit. It's just that in your circle the 300BLK is currently the flavor of the day in mine it's calibers like 17hmr or 35 whelen or a sumtin short magnum.

Oh cool. My opinion was just that. An opinion. Guess what? Yours was just an opinion as well. How could you possibly say that? I mean opinions are not allowed here.

Btw, the 17 is just as flavorful as the 300BLK but the 300BLK is sustainable. Also, it's 2 years old. How old is the 17?

Sustainable? It doesn't fill a void and it will never replace the original 30s(30-30,308,30-06) for deer hunting so it won't sustain. Average Joe's just don't go shoot up a lot of centerfire ammo out of $1000 dollar army guns.

sus·tain (s-stn) tr.v. sus·tained, sus·tain·ing, sus·tains 1. To keep in existence; maintain. 2. To supply with necessities or nourishment; provide for. 3. To support from below; keep from falling or sinking; prop. 4. To support the spirits, vitality, or resolution of; encourage.

No where in that definition does it say that it has to fill a void. What void does the 17 fill while we're at it?
Sustainability has to do with the 20 other calibers that use a 30 Cal bullet and the billions of 5.56 brass already in existence. Unless you expect the 30 Cal market to dry up, 300BLK will be here for a long time. Tell me, when the 17 flavor is over and no more ammo is on the shelves, how do you plan on shooting your rifle? You handload rim fire?

Well, that's just not true, because they do. It also comes in a bolt action and a single shot in case you cannot afford it.

Rifle - amazed no one has said 7.62x39 yet. No questioning that round.

.17 HMR is next IMO

not in the subject but .12 gauge in 3.5 inch.

My opinion is that your run-of-the-mill average Joe buys a couple of boxes of centerfire ammo before deer season. Goes out to his lease and fires a few rounds across the hood of his truck at a card board box with a circle drawn on it. If he gets a 12" group centered around the circle his gun is sighted in close enough to kill a deer so he saves the rest of his ammo for hunting and to check his sights after he misses a deer or drops his rifle. I wish your 300thingamajig a long and prosperous existence.

Guys, I didn't intend this thread to turn into an infected vagina comparing contest. Sorry for that. My question was about fast adoption, not sustained sales.

XD, just a friendly debate. It happens all the time around here. It's what makes the OB the OB.

My vote for rifle caliber goes to whatever the first metallic cartridge available in an affordable rifle was.

While not exactly the first, I'm going with .45 Colt.

Lever guns and revolvers - like peanut butter and jelly.

I don't think very many people are familiar with the beginnings of that round. I'm not sure they directly correlate with the AK-47

The question is about the biggest surge/spike in popularity, not the best run in popularity.

I have to believe that the 30-30 , considering it's popularity even today. Can you imagine how big a rage it must've been in the late 1800's being the first big game ammo to use smokeless powder. The ads must've been like, What goods a second shot after the smoke clears or See what you been missing.
