Wanted the Big Green Egg, but just could not justifying paying all that money for a cooker/smoker. Went to Lowes yesterday and saw the Akorn and I thought what the hell, price was just right and it was what I was looking for.

Well, wanted to share my first meal on the Akorn....

The chickens turned out damn good and I was pleased...I was able to keep the temp at 250 with ease. I used beer stands to hold the birds and to keep it moist...Apple chips for the smoke.

Anyway, just wanted to share my new toy...I am very pleased with it and was wondering anyone else have the Akorn?

Also, I just cooked a pizza on it with a pizza stone and used a pinch of hickory chips...by gawd, I think I found a way to cook pizza at home that tastes damn good!

How much was that puppy if I may ask?
I'd also like the BGE, but don't want to shell out the bucks for it.

$299 at Lowes.

I saw on BBQ blog sites, a lot of owners are really pleased with the Akorn. I know I am damned pleased!

Hmm... That's the same price as the Weber Smokey Mountain. I know they're not exactly the same type of unit, but did you consider the Weber?

Yes, saw the Weber, but damn...it was at the same price point as the Akorn, but the Weber looked to have the same quality as a Brinkmann Smoker (cheap and look it could rust easily in weather). The Akorn is well made and sturdy.

I am glad I gotten the Akron...already planning on the next piece of meat to smoke.

Check out Lowes.com and read up on the reviews...also google it as well...a lot of folks own one and are real pleased with it.

That thing looks cool.

For the record, WSM's are made very well and don't rust because of the enamel coating. No reason not to have both units!

Got the grill at 375...placed a handful of hickory chips on the lump coal...then placed the Pizza on stone and cooked for 15 minutes.

Pizza came out crisp crust and smokey....damn good.

I think I will be buying one of these soon. For $300, don't have much to lose.

My bad, I was referring to the Weber Smokey Joe...it looked no different to the Brinkmann large smoker and was shocked the price of $299.

I've had my Akorn since November. Have cooked everything from burgers, to ribs, to pork butt, to whole piglet. Once you figure out your temperature settings (which you have to learn with any of them), you can do anything that the other guys more expensive cookers can do.

I've been seeing some good reviews. It's in my budget range and have thought about getting one. Might be my next toy.

I have one and love it. My first cook was also chicken as pictured in the OP. For the money, mine was $279.99 online, it can't be beat !!!!! I only use mine for slow / low heat cooks (ribs/shoulder etc.). It's really enjoyable learning how to cook on it, I also have no problem maintaining temp control (using Maverick dual probe thermometer).

Looks pretty good, but I wonder about the longevity? Is it ceramic?

No, I'm not certain what's inside of the iron shell, may be ceramic plates? However, I've had mine for 2 years and use it every 2-3 weekends for long cooks. Not a problem so far. I realize it won't last as long as a BGE, but for a third of the price, and given care, you can't go wrong.

What's the warranty on these?

How hot can you get them?

Are they capable of long smokes like ceramic smokers?

Can get up to 700 degrees, but that is were the temp gauge stops.

Not for certain on warranty, not like the BGE with the lifetime....but my neighbor has the BGE, and their warranty has stipulations what is covered.

Yes, you can cook low and slow on the Akorn...google Char Griller Akorn, there is a guy who makes youtube videos on what he cooks on his...gives helpful tips (i.e., putting a Weber grill grate below iron cast grill with pizza plate to hold pan with fluid for moisture....or made a grate out of metal sheet to put charcoal up high to sear and cook steaks). To answer your question, you can cook for long duration with lump.

No idea on warranty, mine goes over 800 degrees (Maverick thermometer). I can hold 225-275 for 10 hours on two and a half large handfuls of lump charcoal. My parents have a BGE, I'm able to do the same things on this one, figured I couldn't go wrong at $300.

So let me get this straight, you can do all the exact same things on an Akron that you can for a BGE for a 1/3 of the price?

Do you need a forklift to get it out of the car?
