Yes, their two starting pitchers won't maintain the insane pace they are on, but you gotta think the infusion of Ortiz and Middlebrooks slump has got to end some time.

frick Bobby Valentine, Josh Beckett, and not having Koji Uehara.

I think they have enough talent to grab one of the playoff spots though.

I don't know if you can tell if a team is "real" at this point in a season. Give it time.

Yeah, they are an 85+ win team. I picked them to get third in the AL East and the second Wild Card.

Top of the lineup is still really nice. Bullpen should be strong. The rotation will be good enough.

Ellsbury
Victorino
Pedroia
Ortiz
Napoli

I was skeptical about Victorino, but the way he's been hitting in the two hole, and the defense he's been providing are top notch. I'm incredibly pumped for this season now. Barring major injury, this is the best AL East team i've seen thus far.

Lester and Buch...

I'm excited to see what Webster has tomorrow night.

It's only a matter of time before the buckets of KFC and bud light make their way into the locker room.

Depends on what you define as "for real"? If your criteria is winning 85 games, I would say they are for real. But they'll need to be really fortunate in terms of health to contend. If a few of their key guys get injured, I don't see them having enough depth on their team to stay afloat. They need to stay healthy.

I like our team thus far. Lester and Buchholz are pitching lights out and Farrell is a good pitching coach.

Uehara has been money so far but I still worry about our other RP. We need Tazawa or someone else (Mortensen or Wilson) to step up. Bailey has been sufficient thus far as well.

As for hitting, Ortiz back in the lineup really helps. IMO, we have been lacking power in the lineup but Ortiz helps. We still have room to improve though.

We have the ability to be a playoff contender and the fast start helps. I think we can make the playoffs but I am not convinced we can go far.

Nava is going to have a breakout season.

Tazawa has been one of the best relievers in the majors.

LINK

quote:

Looking at all pitchers who have thrown at least 40 innings since the start of last season, Tazawa's 1.96 FIP ranks third in all of baseball. The two pitchers ahead of him are considered two of the most dominant relief pitchers in the league, namely Craig Kimbrel and Aroldis Chapman. If run-prevention is more your style, his 34 ERA- is also third in baseball, this time trailing Kimbrel and Fernando Rodney. Suffice it to say, that's some pretty tremendous company to be in. Looking strictly at his ability to limit walks, Tazawa is truly unmatched. Since April of 2012, he has walked just 2.5 percent of the batters he has faced, which is the best in the majors over that span. On top of that, his 26 percent strikeout rate in that time is the second highest amongst those in the top ten (bottom ten?) of walk-rate, trailing only Sergio Romo.

I think they have a shot at the playoffs. I said before the season they would surprise some people and so far they have. They are going to hit. IMO they are at least as good as the orioles and athletics.

He definitely has closer stuff. I hope $$ doesn't dictate whether or not a move will be made in that direction.
