My Neighborhood Dilemma-To Shoot or Not Shoot a Dog w/ Collar
Posted on 4/18/13 at 1:18 pm

I'll try to keep this short-
Last Sunday a dog (some sort of mutt) broke into my chicken coop and killed one of my chickens. I have seen this dog wandering around the neighborhood before and thought it was a stray even though it had a collar. I just chalked it up to bad luck.
Saw the dog in the neighborhood yesterday when I was riding the 4 wheeler with my daughter. So I stopped and was whistling for it to come over to see if there was a phone number on the collar. A couple outside a nearby house was looking at me funny so I asked them if they knew who this dog belonged to. They said it was theirs. So I told them what happened. The husband didn't say anything, obviously the wife wears the pants. She said sorry and what could she do. I said all I want is for them to keep their dog out of my yard. She said, well, he's just a puppy and we are trying to train him. That makes no sense at all. They seemed like they were pretty clueless. I didn't want to really get into it with them since my daughter was right there, so I left it at that.
I'm sure it's inevitable that this dog will come back into my yard. I'm a pretty passive fella, so I know I won't shoot the dog unless it is attacking my children, but what are my options here? Call the pound? Go back their house with their dog in a stranglehold? Dead horse head in their bed?
My biggest fear is that if this dog would break into my chicken pen and kill a chicken, will it ever be aggressive to kids?

Connect electric fence to trashcan lid, dog pees on lid, dog never comes back.

You have the right to defend livestock from predators. If they agree to pay for chickens killed its your call.

I wouldn't worry about that. A chicken is like a throw toy that is automatic. Tough to pass up.

Do you own a red rider BB gun? Stalk that little bastard and give him a pop as soon as he starts snooping around your chicken coop.

She kind of sorta offered, but I said don't worry about it. Just keep your dog out my yard. Funny thing was while I was talking to them, her dog was running around in her neighbor's yard.

I popped him in the butt (only 2 pumps) last Sunday to get him out of my yard. Mrs. Deacon wanted me to shoot it with my pistol.

I'm sure there are leash laws in your area call the pound or the cops. By confronting them you've become the prime suspect should one of your other neighbors turn out to be Cootkilla.

I have no problem with killing dogs that attack livestock. I think you warned them and if they offer to pay for losses that would be good enough for me. But if it keeps killing them you will be right for acting with force.

Stronger pellet gun. When he steps into your yard, shoot it. Either kills him or he won't come back..

Kick it with steel toes.

Judge to the face.
Clearly the only correct response.

This is where it gets sticky. There are leash laws, pretty sure...but most of my neighbors (including me) do not keep our dogs leashed or fenced up. My dog will go into the neighbors yard (the furthest is two houses down) only because the neighbors like my dog and play with her. I have my neighbors dog come into my yard and we do the same. I'm worried if I call the pound, that would change. We live in a neighborhood, but it's really spread out. (we all have about 1/2 acre)

Just be sure you have the right to kill their dog. People say you can if they are killing your livestock but very few people actually know the law. In Texas its not cut and dry, but I don't know about La.
And she offered to pay for the chicken and any damage you should have taken her up on it.

Upgrade chicken coup. If a dumb puppy can break in a coon or fox could too.
Tough situation raising chickens in suburban setting.

It's actually very nice and secure. I made a redneck chicken run and wedge it into the door opening only during the day if we are home. That dog must have really wanted to get in there.

quote:So what is the law in Texas? I'm talking about catching it in the act. Not tracking down and three hours later cooting it. It would be hard for me to believe that in Texas you see a dog attacking a calf in the pasture and it's illegal to take action. Maybe it is IDK

BB gun or red Paint balls. I'm sure if he showed up all bloody like Cujo it'd get their attention.

Yeah pepper his arse. Don't kill it unless it's like a pit bull or something. If it's owner's want train it, you can.
I had a neighbor kill one of our dogs when I was in college. Dog was small and never aggressive. Said it was messing with his goats. I said alright mf'er it's on. Then he had no goats, no dogs, no cattle, and someone set his woods on fire. shite happens. Don't ask for more.

quote:sorry to tell you this but if you live in a neighborhood like that and get mad at a new puppy basically doing what a puppy does then you may want to think about either fencing your yard in or getting rid of the chickens.
but most of my neighbors (including me) do not keep our dogs leashed or fenced up. My dog will go into the neighbors yard
I mean, lots of dogs who have never seen a chicken will go after them.
