One of the previous posters even thought the sweetbreads were "ballin", then told him he ordered poorly when he got the sweetbreads.

I meant overall. I even admitted the sweetbreads are done better elsewhere; but by no means are they bad at Coquette. Like someone else said, you go to a place like Coquette with huge expectations and then get the fish of the day of course you're going to be disappointed most of the time.

And also with the scallops, maybe that's not ordering poorly to some people .. I just happen to not be a fan of scallops. I've had them there though and serving them alongside pulled pork is a solid play .. plus having tasted the scallops there and elsewhere I'm sure most scallop lovers would think these were great.

lol at people who eat boudin and head cheese but get "grossed out" by the idea of sweetbreads. if they would simply have the balls to give it a try most people would go nuts over them.

good comparison blackenedout .. like a creamy fried chicken nugget for sure. sweetbreads are also really influenced by the sauce that comes with them. Coquette served mine with a very light sauce that worked great .. Flaming Torch's were battered and fried better, but they had too much garlic in the dish.

Yeah I dont get this either. Or the line of thinking that someone can order good or bad at a restaurant. Who knows why a diner with a different set of expectations and tastebuds didnt like a particular dish on a particular day.

Not to mention, that eating in a restaurant like Coquette, which changes its menu frequently, is the effect that almost every dish is the _____ of the day. Be it fish, sweetbreads, steak, chicken, pasta, its all changing frequently.

re: Anyone been to Coquette recently?

what exactly are you wtf'ing? when you hear people talk about a restaurant being great and most of that based off of reviews where people are ordering some of their more ambitious dishes .. then you show up and order a piece of grilled fish .. you're pretty much setting yourself up to be disappointed, because in my experience with Nola fine dining I have never had a fish dish that blew my socks off outside of a barramundi I had a Lilette once. maybe it's just a personal preference, but if I'm going to a new restaurant and looking to be wowed because I've heard about so many good, creative things they're doing I'm not ordering the fish of the day.

would you think that ordering a burger at a pizza joint is more times than not a "bad order?"

Yup, I would expect it all to be good.

When I lived in BR and Marcello's restaurant was still open, I used to go there often just to get the fish of the day. They were bringing in tripletail, mangrove snapper, and other great local fish all the time that I rarely see on menus (in BR or NO). The "fish of the day" was one of the best items on an already great menu. Now, if the fish of the day is your typical mahi, drum, etc...pass.

God, what an awful analogy.

And, where did he say it was just a "piece of grilled fish"?

I was simply offering up an example of why I disagree with this:

the line of thinking that someone can order good or bad at a restaurant.

maybe it wasn't. the last two times I was there they had pan-seared drum and fried catfish. probably the most creative and ambitious dishes in the city no doubt.

Like I said, he may have caught an on an off night. No big deal.

But the rest of the dishes on the current menu include halibut, catfish, duck breast, NY strip, pork cheeks, and softshell crab. I wouldn't consider those items particularly "ambitious", but what they do with them appears to be so. If they told me they had some fresh scamp grouper, swordfish, or triggerfish back in the kitchen, I'd expect them to be able to prepare it properly just as they do the rest of their menu.

Exactly. In a sort of "boutique" type restaurant, there shouldn't be any bad or good ordering.

I don't think you can compare ordering a burger in a pizza restaurant to ordering poorly at a restaurant like Coquette or other like restaurants.

that's what I meant. of course a steak isn't inherently "creative."

Agree with that. Did he say what exactly was wrong with the dishes? Over-cooked? Under-seasoned? Poor execution? Flavor profile was off?

No...he didn't say. I was just trying to illustrate why ordering the fish of the day at a place like Coquette shouldn't somehow lower the standards.

Actually, he said it was oversauced, and that's all he tasted.

I missed that...so I guess we'll file it under "poor execution".

re: Anyone been to Coquette recently?

I am sorry I ordered poorly...but what I ordered besides the dessert was not very good. Since I am not a regular on this board you make the assumption that I am not very adventurous when dining out. I looked at the menu that night, and nothing really stuck out to me, so I just played it safe with my entree. I wanted to order the blind tasting, but the wife was in the mood for scallops, and tasted just fine. The apps and my fish stood out in my experience, and not in a good way.

By the way, if the fish (it wasn't drum or catfish, ) is so basic, I would hope that they could execute it properly. It was a pretty forgettable experience, and I have had better meals at Upperline and Patois in the past month.

Maybe it was an off night (good restaurants have these), but I just can't see myself giving it another shot in the next couple months. Though when I do, I'll make sure I get your approval of what to order first.

The mac-n-cheese and chicken tenders at Outback are outstanding. Thanks to my 6 yo, I am aware of this
