hell honestly though, I find it with school, studying, friends, and having to drive to the arena to sit for 2 hours to watch the game is a lot harder than watching it from home/online and being able to alt-tab in between to get a little studying done.

Great post with actual facts and figures.

NOLA does need to do a better job supporting the team. I'll be moving to town this summer and will do my part starting next season. Winning definitely helps, but it was interesting to see that winning didn't always result in a huge bump in attendance.

Hopefully the re-brand will help the franchise with a fresh start. And I wonder if Benson can do some cross-promotion between the Saints and Pels?

you know I have wondered the same thing. I know that this idea would likely never happen, but I think that if Benson offered a Saints perk for those who sign up for season tickets with the Pelicans then we could likely see a really good boost.

Now I'm talking something good. something along the lines of for anyone who purchases season tickets with the Pelicans then they are automatically boosted into the top, lets say 25-50% (depending on the amount of money spent) of those on the waiting list for Saints season tickets as well.

It would be a great way to reward the best of sports fans in the area and would also boost the Pelicans numbers. Purchase season tickets with the Pelicans and automatically get pushed to the front of the line for Saints tickets.

Also take into account the poverty of this city, most of the sports fans rather sit at home and save $100 for him/her and their 3 friends and just grab a box of chicken or pizza and some drugs for $20 and chill

you are right, basketball is 3 maybe 4 times a week, and people aren't going to go to all 4 of those games during that week, maybe 1 of them if the team is lucky.

And New Orleans always has shite going on (not an excuse just the reality) that takes some of that traffic away from the games.

People don't really get up for the games like they do with the other bull shite

When I was looking for games to go to, I always looked for something on the weekends. Its too much to go to games during the week with school and work

Let me say this to you and hopefully we are done with this. ( I know y'all, thank God). I never wanted any shite with you are anyone. But you started calling me out early on for my dissent of Monty. Then you started personally attacking me with all these " dick " comments. I think anyone with some testosterone in their body would get pissed. And I did.

If that was a sincere apology, I'll accept it and apologize to you too. Lets stop bothering these other posters with this trivial juvenile shite.

You can believe me or not (frankly, I don't give a shit) but I can go through your post and address your points with objective, reliable data. But it doesn't matter. If this is a bad basketball market, no suggestion you, I or anyone else can post on this board actually can do anything about it.

Really, I am fricking amazed at you and the troll (grandbelly) and your borderline clinical obsession with the subject. I'm not "making excuses" for anything. It's simple.

1. The Pelicans can sell out 90% of their games and they will not rank in the top ten when it comes to attendance. Simple fact of seating capacity.

2. If they produce a consistent winning team they will do fine. If you're using the first few years when they arrived as some sort of accurate measure of future results, you're deluded.

3. The re-branding will make a difference in terms of local fan interest (assuming a competitive team).

And even if you don't believe anything I've said, what the frick does it matter? Does posting this shite give you a hard on? Does it make you feel superior?

I don't go out during the week really

I normally don't do much on weekday nights during the semester. Plus its rare to be able to find a group of friends and everyone has a free night to go to the game

Ditto, I rarely got to make it to a game since I always have left work at 6:30 at the earliest. So usually I get home in time to watch it. I plan to make a lot more next season though. They should do a scrimmage up here in BR just to have current and prospective fans meet the players (not just garbage ones).

I don't agree with this at all. We had one of the best players of all time for a number of years and the crowds still sucked.

Crowds suckes because teams did. The Paul argument doesn't work.
Year we were 1 seed crowd came late in year but def came
Year 2 startes strong then we sucked at ens and denver series killed any momentum built
Next year paul tears acl
Next year he wants out but crowd still came late in year.

If we suck as a fanbase so be it. They have come when a reason to. But Pau and companyl never put together 2 seasons of solid basketball. Was roller coaster

I said it earlier, with bad as we have been I'm the idiot for getting season tickets ans driving in from br. I don't blame anyone who doesn't do it. I just love bball ajd the hawnets. I would love a packed arena more than anyone. But to stress over it like some do..I dunno. Yoh obviously do your part and like us have tix...all you can do.I give mine away when I can't make it hoping it gets some on board...do same

So, I see a bunch of numbers and no analysis.

Here's one analysis. Look at the attendance. Then look at the operating income.

Do they look really related? Does the high attendance go with the high OI? Low with low? That'd be the relationship I think you'd want to show . . . but it's not there.

Team salary, ownership transactions, loans from the NBA, etc. all affect those numbers more than the attendance fluctuations.

1000 STH randomly chosen is about $2M, give or take. That's full price for the season whether you go or not. Attending adds in more chance at stuff like concession and parking money (not from me!).

So . . . where is the conclusion?

Not correct. Franchise had a consistent string of sellouts in the 2008 season.

see this type of attitude is exactly what I am talking about. I just posted factual information backing up the attendance issues and you chose to again respond out of anger. why the foul language if you're not angry?

also when did I ever say or even hint that the Pelicans should be in the top attendance wise? that has never been the case. we're not talking about them selling out every game. we're talking about just putting up decent numbers and building a fan base. what you fail to realize (or fail to accept) is that even if you take the route of arguing "its the arena capacity percentage that matters", that still isn't true in the Pelicans case. the BOTTOM LINE is the organization consistently loses millions of dollars.

also you tend to ignore the fact that the Pelicans also consistently offer the cheapest tickets in the NBA. so even if they played in the damn Superdome and sold over 30,000 tickets per game, they still wouldn't crack the top 10 in operating income.

You posted factual information that failed to show why it matters, which is the claim in the title.

The nba had lossess of $300 million every season since 2005 before the new cba. Seems as it was the model of nba screwed up where everyone lost money

yes that is the NBA as a league. the NBA as a league may have lost money, but most TEAMS have been very profitable every single year. just look it up. here is the 2011-12 numbers -

23 out of 30 teams made profit.
