Thought this was pretty cool, from Jeff Cooper himself in 1993:
quote:

J.D. Jones, the prominent advocate of pistol hunting, dropped by the other day to show us a most curious ballistic development. He has taken the 223 case, blown it out to 30 caliber and installed a match bullet inside which takes up practically the entire case. A pinch of the proper powder pushes this bullet out the muzzle at subsonic velocities, thus permitting silent fire.

down the page a bit

Jones actually took the .221 fireball and "blew it out" to accept the 30 caliber bullet, which became known as the 300 whisper. The 300BLK is the necked down .223. They both accomplish what is essentially an identical cartridge, though the blackout is the saami spec name.

So was Cooper misinformed? Or maybe Jones changed his formula when he officially put out the whisper.

Either way, that was 20 years ago (duh). That AWB really set us back.

Everything i ever read said it started from the .221 fireball, and eventually people felt it was easier to modify .223 brass. I feel like i read somewhere that he actually advised against using .223.

I'm almost positive this is correct.

TOTH knows for sure. He's a whisper shooter IIRC.

This is where i got most of my information from when researching it to purchase. There's also a few good shooting blogs that come up from googling.

I am a 300BLK shooter but not an expert. I make it go boom and piggies die.

Were I a single man, I would own this:
DD/Ambush 300 for $1500 BIN

This is worth watching just for the 4 wheeler sightings: SF firefight

I bet at 1700 bucks
There are few i would rather have than the one I built, simply because it's my own creation of sorts. That is, until it malfunctions

I paid a hair over 14 for it back then. They are proud of them now. I still havent put but just a few hundred rounds through it. Cant afford to shoot it any more.

Unless I'm looking at something wrong, that's the only round that's not available at any price on gunbot.

I guess it's low on the totem pole for the manufacturers.

Travis Haley has shot 100,000 rounds of it.

Yeah i had planned on mostly reloading for mine, but wasnt prepared for the primer shortage. I have a good bit of once fired brass waiting from the rounds i have put through it.
