Well Jerry Jones kind of threw a monkey wrench in all of that. 1 playoff win get's you top QB money.

Actually, it really proves my point.
Romo will be getting $16 Mill a year (which is 80% of Brees' salary). Is he worth that? No.

Romo isn't Brees but he's better than anybody else they could have gotten.

Plus, you can't use Jerry Jones as a yard stick when it comes to doling out salaries...remember he made Roy Williams one of highest paid WRs in the leauge!!!

re: Saints are 2nd to worst in 2014 cap space

The defense in 2010 was top 5. I know, hard to
believe.

The defense in 2009 was major part of winning the Superbowl, and forced many turnovers.

The team in 2011 was arguably the best we've had, especially offensively. The defense wasnt anything good, but not awful. They had moments.

With GW the Saints were middle of the pack,
or close to it. That's all you need with an offense like the Saints. He used the personnel to attack and force turnovers. They have up yards, but got the offense the ball in key times. The defense last year was historically bad because A) no leader, and complete dysfunction. And B) a scheme that doesn't come close to fitting in with the personnel. Spags relied on pass rush from the front, the Saints do no have that. They can however get pressure from blitzing, because we saw Williams do it.

I feel a lot better about the Ryan hire knowing he is a "players coach" and the guys will want to play for him. He kinda reminds me of Williams, but with smaller tits. He will get more out of the personnel, which I personally feel fits better for the 3-4.

The 2011 defense can be directly attributed to how blazing our offense was. We were often way ahead of opponents which gave Williams the freedom to blitz all the time even when unnecessary, in attempt to be opportunistic like 2009. The difference was he used this in close games too. What happened vs SF in the playoffs was the same scenario that happened in the ATL game we won when Michael Turner got stuffed in OT on 4th down in their own territory. The end of the game they gained like 80 yards on 3 straight plays to Harry Douglas.

Bottom line though: The cap hell is to be expected because Brees won't be around for that long. So we have to do what we can to give ourselves the best chance to win RIGHT NOW. When next season comes around we re-evaluate.

Too much God Damn pessimism pre-draft about the past. It's a new season people. That's the point of being a fan remember? Get excited until you have a reason not to be.

The worst thing is you knew when Harper and Smith signed those extensions they were horrible deals, and we still did it. If I remember correctly Will Smith's happened right after the Charles Grant experience.

I know they were. Unfortunately Matt Hasselbeck remembered Roman Harper actually played safety for us

Depending on turnovers year in year out is fools gold, as we've learned. That defense was still ranked at the bottom of the league. Minus Sharper we went right back to where we were.

Definitely. Thats what makes it so frustrating.

They were still ranked in the 20s though. And Roman Harper was still in our secondary.

This is the 3rd offseason in a row i've gotten into these same arguments and this is the 3rd year in a row i've been called a nega Saints, blah blah blah...

I could pull up threads from last year with people swearing the Spags' system was the way to go and how it was a much better fit for us.

My stance hasn't changed. We can keep changing coaches, but it means nothing if that guy is hamstrung by the same shitty players the last guy had.

Definitely not calling you a negasaint. I too have been incredibly frustrated with the defense. I'm just saying it doesn't have to be great. The Patriots and Packers, two similar teams to the Saints, have had bad defensive play over the years as well. Their defenses have been able to force more turnovers as of late though.

I really just want a play maker on D; even if it's just one, it'll go a long way.

Absolutely. And when you screw up, you admit it and dump the scrubs. You don't keep throwing garbage out there year after year and blame it on the "system"
Folks waiting for a guy like Roman Harper to find himself under a 4th d coordinator are kidding themselves. He's a terrible player and should be gone. Vilma can't play anymore. Jenkins missed as many tackles as anybody in the league.
With only a couple changes, we're basically throwing the same garbage out there on defense that we had last year and wishing upon a star that guys like Harper magically grow new legs and the ability to run with TEs and receivers.

Well said!

No, I don't think he should be fired. I just don't think he should be as bulletproof as he is.

He isn't new at this, he's been on the job as long as anybody in the league, over a decade.

He's got Benson handing him blank checks, there's no excuse for fielding arena league defenses every year.

He's not the talent evaluator though, he is signing who he's asked to. He is the numbers guy. Yes, there have been terrible contracts like Roman Harper, which they were forced to give way more than they wanted because of the market. We all hate that contract, but there really wan't anyone else. However, he has brought in people that changed the culture of the New Orleans Saints and made them a good team. For whatever reason, this team has had many poor draft choices on defense, but that is not the work of Loomis.

He looked anything but bullet proof last year. And I don't know what you do to a underperforming GM except fire them.
