Outside of baton Rouge, what difference does it really make what some writer's opinion of LSU and it's coaches are?

I have no problem with the poll except for every coach in front of him can't beat him except for Saban and he only has a small lead in the series.....

Mark richt has been at Georgia 12 years and never had an undefeated regular season or played in a national title game, most years he has dodged the powers of the west and still been unable to secure a spot in the ship.

Doesn't half the LSU fan base agree with this? The majority of LSU fans I know, work with, etc. detest Les Miles. Fact. They don't care about his record, recruiting, etc. Sad but true.

Maybe...but only we should have the right to criticize Les Miles

Honestly, I think if two or more LSU fans are discussing Les Miles, then you will hear a lot of criticism. If a LSU fan and some other SEC fan are talking football, the LSU fan would probably defend Miles more often than not. It's all about the company you keep.

Here's what i love about list's like that, Spurrier is #2 and it's easy to make that case. Hard to argue with it given his success. But if LSU is kind of underachieving, didn't Florida under SOS? How many titles did he win after all there? Didn't he get smoked in a NCG? Didn't he back into another NCG? Didn't he blow other shots at NC's like 2001 losing at home to Tenn? Losing as the #1 team to Gerry DiNardo?

If Saban is the best ever (he is certainly building a case) and his recruiting classes are ranked higher, then why is a team in his division underachieving whe it's beaten him 2 of last 3 regular season games and finished higher in SEC West 2 of the last 3 years?

Miles is a very good coach, he's just not as good as Saban and since he repalced Saban, who then took a job in the same division, he will always be compared against him.

Mullen being ranked ahead is absolute joke. The fact he hasn't had a real offers to move up should be rather telling. If Freeze and OM pass him, which looks likely, he will be gone.

I like Kevin Sumlin a lot, but he has yet to win without a star QB and the 2 he's coached he didn't even recruit.

Richt looks like a poor man's Les Miles. For all the shite Miles gets from his own fans, even some of his biggest haters will have admit he recruits well and keeps the overwhelming majority of La Talent. UGA only got 2 of the top 15 players in their own state last year.

Yeah, we seem to love to eat our own.

Les is not perfect, but I'm hard pressed to entertain too much poor mouthing from other LSU fans when we lead all BCS schools in wins and all SEC schools in wins since 05.

If we can't enjoy the very most successful LSU period in LSU history without picking apart the author of that success on a continual basis, shame on us.

Many football knowledgeable people including many on this board think LSU wins despite of CLM.
They fail to realize just how difficult it is to remain elite in this conference year in and year out. These same people wouldve put Bobby Petrino ahead of CLM a few years ago. Or a guy like Urban Meyer who couldnt handle the stress. Claimed he had health issues and couldnt coach anymore? The SEC obviously claimed another because when "easy to win" OSU called, all of a sudden his mysterious illness went away. BTW Miles had the same opportunity at Michigan and decided to stay at LSU and compete against the best.
But thats right he's a terrible coach and is only the 7th best in his own conference?
I dont know if I will ever trust CLM on his game day mgt but I do trust him with everything else and wouldnt trade him for any coach.
When its all said and done Les will out last them all.
Head Coach criteria
1. Sanctions in SEC- 2nd to Vandy
2. Graduation- 2nd to Vandy
3. Recruiting/NFL pipeline - 1st or 2nd
4. Win Loss record- 1st or 2nd
Does this look like the 7th best coach in a conference?

I wonder how Chavis and Cameron found their way to LSU and how Studrawa decided to stay after his demotion. I guess this all happened despite CLM.
PS
He had a team that was 13-0 just two years ago, playing the toughest schedule in the country. And he did all this with poor QB play. Show me the last time that happened.
Its amazing the AD just gave him a raise and an extention, what in the world is he looking at.

EVERY time Athlon puts out a ranking or preseason prediction i say the same thing: ATHLON IS FULL OF BULL. this is no exception. they have to be the worst sports magazine/org. in the country. any sane person that believes this ranking is anywhere near correct is either EXTREMELY biased or EXTREMELY ignorant. i'm gonna say the folks at Athlon are both. i quit buying their shite long ago and frankly, am surprised they are still in business.

teeMike, i don't know who you work with but i can assure you THE VAST MAJORITY OF LSU FANS SUPPORT MILES and want him to be our coach. sounds like you are in the wrong crowd; didn't your momma warn you against things like that? yes, there is a very vocal minority of miles dissenters but those that i have met wouldn't be happy would ANY coach. they didn't even like saban that much, esp afgter the eggs he layed in some games and in his last season. after he left, his recruits "walked on water" but they didn't his last year now did they?

I see where the writer is coming from. I think he's saying if you took all these coaches and had them all coaching all the different teams in the conference, what order do you put them in. If its just on merit, its Saban, then Miles. I could see a case for a guy like Franklin with the restrictions he has at Vandy or Mullen at Miss St. or Spurrier at South Carolina. I however cannot see a guy like Richt being ahead of him, he's had plenty of time at UGA and they have a near the top tier talent base in Georgia. Sumlin, I couldn't rank him ahead of Miles either, he's done it for all of one year at A&M with one of football's greatest players.

umm, more SEC championships, more NC championships, more NC appearances. don't give me this talent difference garbage; georgia has more talent than louisiana. they are 50% larger. it is LSU than is going into georgia and cherry picking athletes NOT the other way around. richt is the mack brown of the SEC; hell, he's not as good as brown.

It's common knowledge that anyone can coach LSU Football and win because we have all kinds of "natural" advantages.

At least that's why the agnostics say is the reason Les wins.

They ignore the fact that Mike Archer, Curley Hallman, and Gerry Dinardo were hard pressed to do close to what Les' done. They ignore history which shows that the head coach makes all the difference in the world.

Nick Saban first proved that at LSU and again at Alabama.

Les is mainting LSU as a top tier program, and throughout our history; few have been able to do that.

Remember Charlie Mac couldn't maintain what Dietzel built and he was considered a very good coach.

If we look at kinda current college football history, schools that climbed to the top under one coach, climbed back to the top under their very next coach, and maintained a level of excellence are few...if any.

Michigan couldn't do it...Miami couldn't do it...Tennessee couldn't do it...Florida hasn't done it...ND couldn't do it...USC hasn't done it...Ohio St. couldn't do it...Nebraska couldn't do it...Fla St hasn't done it.

BUT LSU has done it!

Sometimes I think us LSU fans don't have a clue as to how lucky we have been to have gone back to back with the likes of Saban and Miles.
