A white cornerback. No thank you.

I know he is a safety. His profile just says DB though.

Cut from the Jason Sehorn mold I'm being told.

I hope he makes the team for this reason alone.

This signing just doesn't make sense.

ETA: Just read Chad's thread concerning Triplet's comments. Other than "being a favorite of Rex Ryan", I still don't get it.

so many people say safety is a need for us. We sign one that can play both positions, special teams and is a great locker room guy and it doesn't make sense?

Steve Gleason 2.0 at worst. Occasional starter at best.

Leonhard graded out well last season per PFF (+4.6 in just 271 snaps). Probably signed at the vet minimum. Should at least push Jenkins/Harper to earn the starting job (I've seen him listed as both a FS and SS). He was really good for the Jets before two season ending injuries, and, again, he was apparently effective for the Broncos last year, so it seems like he could be a really effective rotational player so as to keep him fresh.

Plus it was a one year deal, so likely at the vet minimum which would only cost us ~$100k against the cap at this point.

I disagree. If we can generate some qb pressure, watch how good our secondary is going to look all of a sudden, even with essentially the same dudes. A pass rush fixes a lot of ills.

Harper has gone downhill since the Seattle playoff game and Jenkins has never really shown us anything aside from a few fantastic hustle plays. Again, this move pretty much costs us nothing cap wise.

so you're admitting that you are disagreeing with the thought process that opposes mickey loomis, sean payton, and rob ryan?

Picking up a live body to put on the field (even if he can play 22 positions) is no great accomplishment. The problem is we already have too many of these types of guys on defense already. jack of trades and masters at none.

I hope Mr. Leonard well but his history doesn't tell a promising story. The man can't stay healthy.

I don't think I'm disagreeing with them at all. They are essentially sticking with our guys. You don't think they assume the signing of Leonhard is a fix do you? Creating competition, sure. But I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't even make the squad.

You do understand when people say something is a need, its not just referring to starters but the position as a whole. They so safety (depth) as a need, thus the signing. Or do you want to retract a bit and agree safety depth is a need?
