I find fresh trumps most other qualities. Especially in my espresso machine. French press as well.
I highly recommend the River Road "creole" whole bean. I also get small batches of the freshest roast at whole foods. The RR Creole has a rich nutty flavor that I haven't found with any other brand. Check the date sticker on the bottom and find the freshest bag you can.
