I have a copy of Rick's book(Purpose Driven Life) it was actually given to me by someone who felt like I needed The Lord in my life and was a catalyst for me coming to my faith.

That dudes book is garbage and filled with false doctrine. Isn't worth the paper it's printed on.

Sorry about his son.

no. This isn't the case for people with severe depression

Right, rebel. I also hate the term weak

re: Pastor Rick Warren's son commits suicide

People that think suicide is an act of selfishness or that depression is a case where a person simply needs to pull themselves up "by the bootstraps" shouldn't be allowed to participate in the conversation any further. They've immediately shown that they haven't the slightest clue as to what they're talking about. And that type of shite always pops up in these threads.

re: Pastor Rick Warren's son commits suicide

If a book is able to make someone think more about their faith and ultimately accept Christ into their life is it really garbage?

I'm not saying I go to his church or follow his teachings strictly, I'm just saying his book, for me, began me wanting to learn more.

Good for you. It doesn't work that way for everybody.

Yeah, and you can't argue with them. They think they know it all.

^This.

ETA: I've never really been suicidal, but I've had occasionally episodes of severe depression. You can't think rationally and comprehend the consequences of your actions like that.

Had a buddy recently kill himself. Such an awful experience

The closest person to me that committed suicide is LSUFanLa = couple of years ago.

I have had two high school acquaintances who killed themselves and one person I worked with whose son killed himself. Also a distant cousin - before I was born.

Just cannot comprehend the mindset that would make one go thru with it - I can understand thinking about it though.

Topwater, you're really taking it on the chin with this one.

It's cool. I understood what you were saying. People who kill themselves aren't thinking about the world around them. They are consumed with their own pain, and feel like nobody will ever understand it.

Are you an expert?

How can anyone truly know what is going through the minds of people who commit suicide? Wouldn't the reason differ in each individual?

re: Pastor Rick Warren's son commits suicide

All I was really doing was giving the typical OT response that it is a selfish act distasteful? Yes but I was just being an arse and that isn't how I feel about it

I don't care about some guy I don't know doing that I will save my pity and concern for innocent children that get murdered, molested, and abused.

It's not just that, everyone has a breaking point. If you put someone through physical torture it's easy to imagine them reaching a breaking point where they would prefer death rather than face anymore pain. For some reason, that simple ability to identify with, and appreciate, the level of pain one can experience and its toll on a human being doesn't seem to cross over to things like depression in modern society. People undervalue the ceiling of emotional and psychological pain, which I never understand.

Just look at cases of self-harm where people physically hurt themselves, sometimes in extreme ways (breaking their own bones, burns, major lacerations) all in an attempt to cope with the emotional pain they're experiencing. That alone should tell you just how bad depression and other mental illnesses can be. And on top of it all people that experience it also have to deal with stigmatization. No one tells someone with cancer to just look on the bright side, or that other people have it worse.

In a way.

quote:

By facing similar decisions but choosing the different option. And yes, the motivation for suicide of course varies across the population.

ETA: It's not the lack of understanding that pisses me off in threads like this, it's the lack of respect or empathy for others who were clearly going through hell.

Not entirely the case, but its a contributing factor. They can't see pass their own problems. Not every case is exactly like your uncle.

Clinical depression and personality disorders are different things, though they can exist comorbidly.
