re: Rutgers AD has been fired

Seriously, if ESPN pushed half as hard on the Notre Dame issues as they have on this Rutgers stuff, then Brian Kelly would not only be fired, but may very well be in prison. A kid died because of Kelly's negligence, yet he has a job. At Rutgers, no harm was done to any of those players, yet now a coach (who was wrong) and an athletic director (who was not in the wrong) has now been fired.

So every article assumes the players were actually gay?

It's not hate speech if the intended recipient isn't an actual target.

Do a quick google search and read the first line of almost every article about the coach's firing. "Homophobic slur" is used in the first line of the story most of the time.

I was indifferent on the ball coach, but this is total BS that the AD will be fired. He punished the guy earlier this year, 3 game suspension and a $50,000 fine. That's not chump change.

And why is all of this happening? Because some deuchebag that went to a basketball camp after he was told not to by his boss did not get his contract renewed after it ended.
He's being fired because he meted out a suspension for a fireable offense because he thought nobody would be the wiser (ever see the video). That's it.

He compromised the integrity of the basketball program and university so he wouldn't have to make the hard choice to fire a coach who deserved to be fired.

I'm no fan of ESPN, but everyone in the administration who was aware of the severity of the problem and didn't recommend sh*tcanning this coach should lose their job, IMO.

quote:

This is an example of the first sentence of most of the articles written about the firing. As if "screaming homophobic slurs" is a fire-able offense.
I'm pretty sure it was the physical abuse of players that did him in.

God forbid you punish the shite out of someone and try to rehabilitate them, that's just terrible leadership isn't it?

You clowns act like they let it slide. They took it very seriously, did a thorough investigation, weighed many options and made a decision that resulted in a very punitive impact on the employee.

I think the AD did a very good job in a very difficult position.

But I'm not a low information reactionary like 99% of twitter and 100% of espn. So my opinion isn't really relevant.

This.

It's just hilarious to me how people get so fired up over trivial issues just because the media pushes behind it.

But don't worry, once the new season of Honey Boo Boo starts or another Kardashian gets pregnant the "outrage" will pass...yet the current Rutgers basketball players and plenty of other Rutgers sports teams will now suffer

Why do the AD and football coach at Notre Dame still have a job after sending a kid into an unsafe environment that led to his DEATH? What about the poor girl that committed suicide after her accusations of a rape were swept under the rug because the accused was a football player?

ESPN has no problem burying those stories deep in the broadcast, but this Rutgers coach was headline news and we had to get opinions from every person that ever touched a basketball.

No but you're just as biased bc you seem to think if someone has the opposite opinion of you they must be reactionary low information etc etc

Your "opinion" isn't the only valid one made on an informed basis.

Firing is the easy way out. Hate what our society is becoming.

Say I call someone a **** and shove them. My boss penalizes me, threatens my job, I apologize and never do anything like that again. I'm on file with HR they doc my pay. I'm penalized, that's the end of it.

Then a coworker tells someone what I did last year and they fire my boss for not being harsh enough? Absurd.

It was a terrible blow up by the coach but come the fcuk on. Our society sucks.

Nevermind that ESPN sat on this until all eyes were on college basketball to release it. The other day I heard an ESPN radio personality bitching about having to discuss this instead of the final four. It was his own network that decided to run the story when they did. They could have done it sooner.

then they fired the coach later. if they felt like they did the right thing, they should've stood by the coach and told ESPN where to go. Instead, the AD caved to pressure and fired him.

The AD screwed up somewhere in this situation. He either should have fired Rice as soon as he saw the video, or never fired him at all.

And, the coach was physically abusing the student-athletes. There isn't a person in the world that would have a problem with a professor being fired if he threw a desk at a student, grabbed them by their shirt and shoved them out the door, and called him a fig on his way out.

But, it's a coach so you want to let it slide.

The problem with putting this on ESPN is that it was a story that transcended that platform.

It was talked/written about by many other media members.

I'm not a ESPN fan but you seem like the guy who just wants to blame it for everything regardless of the circumstances.

I don't have an answer to this, and I acknowledge the validity of your beef with ESPN.

But I do believe the decision to fire the AD over this was correct.

This is spot on. I dont understand how people dont understand this. If the AD does the right thing to begin with, he still has a job and is still praised as one of the top 5 AD's in the country.

One theory I have on this regarding the AD's actions and maybe our resident rutgers guy can answer this. Was this brought to his attention whe the Big10 talks were going on? If so, Im thinking he might have felt that a firing like this wouldve looked bad on the University and thats why he did it in a hush hush manner. Seems pretty plausible if thats the case. Doesnt make it right at all, but I could see that mindset.

Absurd?? What world do you live in?

Employees are constantly held responsible for decisions they make.

If your boss's boss doesn't like how he handles a situation why would it be absurd to fire him?
