Should I reach out to a former athlete?

A couple of years back, an athlete of mine told me he was going to transfer to another school to play there. He thought he would have more visibility there and would have a better chance to get a scholarship.
I advised him not to go, that he would be part of the machine there while he would be the focal point for us. I honestly thought that he would get buried on the bench there. However in the past two years he has a state championship and was just named all-state first team.
We haven't really talked since he left, I would see him around here and there and we would talk for a few minutes, but nothing in detail. A part of me feels like I should call and congratulate him while another part of me feels like I should just leave it alone.
What do the coaches and others on this board think?

Sure. Do it. Tell him you are proud of him for trusting his instincts and making it happen.

Congratulate him and then ask to join his entourage

Quit trying to ride the kids' coat tails. You had your shot at him and lost out. Wait till his career is over if you really want to make it look like you care.
