Commander's Saturday Brunch Was Excellent!

I didn’t care for the brunch menu the last time I was there for Saturday brunch (though it was fine for most folks), but this time it was excellent. The chef has just redone the entire menu so most of it included brand new dishes. Everything was excellent. This was a 3 course meal and a bargain for the food. Prices range from $29-$40 for the 3 courses depending on the entrée and the servings were extremely generous. I couldn’t come close to eating all of my food. I think this is a great deal for a fine dining and I highly recommend it.
Everyone had drinks and those were wine, bloody marys and gin fizzes. Service was excellent but we were at a friend of the family table, so I’d expect it to be good, though Commander’s service has always been excellent in my experience. Plates are brought and taken away simultaneously by multiple servers etc…
Here are the meals we had with the prices for all courses and a few pics here and there. (No hands or body parts belong to me.)
-$39
Turtle soup.
Braised leg of lamb strudel with spring onions, mushrooms and root vegetables baked into a crisp French pastry shell with petite greens, chervil, basil and first of the season mint.
Pontchatoula strawberry shortcake with warm buttermilk biscuit, chantilly cream and powdered sugar.
-$37
Turtle soup
Grand Isle surf ‘n turf which was garlic grilled white shrimp and 12 hour smoked shoulder of Dubroc hog over Louisiana “dirty grits” with a soft poached egg and white truffle infused woodland sauce. The pork was sliced not pulled. I almost got this and didn’t taste it. Should have.
Bread pudding soufflé
$39
Spicy wild shrimp & avocado remoulade. It had chopped avocado, bbq onions, red chili, cerlery and crushed lemon vinaigrette in addition to the remoulade.
Pecan crusted fish
“Easter Sundae” which was chocolate ice cream with candied pecans, chantilly cream, caramel and chocolate sauces and a cherry on top.
Me-$37
Shrimp henican
Bayou Biscuits & Gravy Benedict which was homemade tasso and cheddar biscuits layered with mustard glazed Chisesi ham with crab boil poached eggs, grilled crawfish and andouille gravy.
Bananas foster butterscotch pudding which was sliced bananas and sticky butterscotch toffee pudding with bourbon-bacon whipeed cream and gingersnap cookie crunch.
We also had sides of “dirty grits” and sugarcane and black pepper bacon, both of which was excellent. The grits were smooth with a dirty rice flavor, but there were no chunks of anything in them. I assume they pureed dirty rice base and mixed it in. They were really really good.

One of my birthday gifts is a restaurant trip with family to Nola around Easter. That's the sole purpose of this particular trip. I don't get to choose every restaurant, but it's a food fest and I now need to go to food rehab. Thinking about a reality show.
We went to Cafe Des Amis on a side trip to kick it off. Then, we hit Delmonico, Casamento's, Vincent's on St. Charles, Mr B's, Arnaud's Jazz Bistro, Commander's and Domenica. On the last night, I had the charcuterie from the Windsor Court in the room while enjoying cocktails on the balcony. Just couldn't get motivated to go out. One person ordered from Lebanon's Cafe which was very good. I got some kibbe that I brought home and it was really good.
Was a fun and good trip.

That is really cool. Kinda reminds me of when I didn't live in NOLA, but I'm not that fancy.

I just did the chefs playground menu with the wife at Commanders. It was their Passover Menu. Which had me hesitant at first, but I was blown away. They are easily one of the top restaurants in NOLA. Service was beyond good(although when u order a nice bottle of wine along with cocktails and the tasting menu, I think they know u are serious). That meal has to be in my top 3. We did brunch there a while back, and it was just as good!

I came close to ordering the Passover menu. There was a large table next to us with some locals who didn't realize it was being offered. Tory came out and brought them samples after their meal. He hung around them a long time. Brought out the desserts himself with the wait staff, also.
We almost did the chef's playground Wed night, but we only had 3 for that night, so we passed on it. Sounds like it was great!

I love you Gris. This was great and makes me anticipate my Sunday brunch later this month so much more. This will be my first trip home on two years, and I booked a Sunday brunch here for my family. I had been a little wary until now.

Enjoy! Savor the whole package!

The wife and I had brunch there last year and she talks about the Shrimp Henican all the time. The meal from top to bottom was truly amazing and we can't wait to make the trip down again soon.

So glad you had a great trip .. y'all really took it to another level with all that good eating.

You have to work to eat bad food in New Orleans. We had a nice variety of eateries.

Did you pull this list off in 5 days?
