The nominees were...
The Graduate,In the Heat of the Night, Bonnie and Clyde, Dr. Doolittle, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner
and the winner was....
Just shows you how loaded that year was for Best Picture. Cool Hand Luke, The Dirty Dozen and Wait Until Dark werent even nominated. (WOuld have likely been if it was like now with 10 nominees)
I've watched these films recently. I think The Graduate is the most "iconic" of these films. Guess Who's Coming to Dinner is an acting masterpiece by Spencer Tracy, Hepburn and Poitier. Bonnie and Clyde might have "aged" the least imo. Dr.Doolittle was a movie I enjoyed when I was a kid. In the Heat of the Night might be my favorite because of the material.
Which movie does the Movie/TV board think is the "Best Picture".

Based strictly on the pictures from each film, Bonnie and Clyde gets my vote.

No but it wasn't a terrible selection either.

Since you're a fan of these particular movies the most..
Do you agree with Hepburn winning best actress over Anne Bancroft?

They sure as shite didn't get it right in 78, 99, and 03.

Yeah, again, I'd say either were worthy candidates. It's tough for me to pick one over the other.

No. I think Hepburn herself said that award was a sympathy vote because Spencer Tracy died the previous year.

Possibly so.
To take it one step further..
I kinda think Poitier should have been nominated over Tracy for Best Actor. But it was very close.

Cool Hand Luke
is my pick for 1968. Easily, as it was #2 in my all time list. Personal taste, as it always comes down to but it is amazing to me that it was not even nominated. 1968 was a very strong year but I think 2012 will go down as a stronger one in the long run.

In the Heat of the Night or Bonnie and Clyde. I think both are great movies.

It should've been Guess Who's Coming to Dinner
The Graduate may have been acceptable.

The Graduate is in my Top 5 all time.
Winner shoulda been.
ETA: (and Graduate is a big film school teaching film - so they did something right. Great, great film with so much to appreciate about it.)

Reporting for duty
There is an entire book devoted to that year's Oscar nominees:
The author presents the five Best Picture nominees as symbolic of the era's filmmaking:
The Graduate -- European-style sex comedy
Guess Who's Coming To Dinner -- Theatrical liberal do-goodery
Bonnie And Clyde -- Nouvelle Vague-influenced character drama
In The Heat Of The Night -- problem picture as thriller
Dr. Doolittle -- Musical/Children's film as marketing exercise
In terms of which of these films was the most significant at the time, there is no question -- Bonnie & Clyde. It introduced new techniques to American filmmaking and helped usher in the "New Hollywood", which would be ushered out by the success of Star Wars in 1977.
The book is very good and a must-read for any movie buff, but the author actually misses the point. Ultimately, the most significant of these films would turn out to be...
Dr. Doolittle.
