Am I the only one who preferred DBTs pre- Isbell more?

Seems like it...

Other than TDJHD, Isbell's songs are pretty meh. Cooley is the band.

Agree with the poster above on Hood. What an a-hole.

I think Brighter Than Creation's Dark is their best album, made in the wake of Isbell leaving. I think Hood is now underrated as its become cliche to bag on him. I will say that he doesn't have as good of a filter as the other guys. Cooley and Isbell could crank out three absolute gems per album, but Hood could write a song a day if you let him. Though some of his ideas our best left on the drawing board.

I think Hood is a phenomenal storyteller, though Cooley is better at creating and inhabiting a single character.

Also, if you've seen the doc on the band, the scene with Isbell playing Goddamn Lonely Love while the camera focused on Shonna Tucker is heartbreaking. I do think DBT has largely run its course, but they had about a decade long run of brilliance, which is better than almost everyone else on the planet.

absurd, imo. i honestly don't think isbell could hold cooley's quill

and that's saying cooley is superb, not isbell is terrible.

personally, i like patterson. but patterson's misses are worse than cooley or isbell's. when he's on, he's amazing.

sometimes i think he writes songs because he feels the need to say anything. sometimes, he writes with conviction.

i think this really sums it up. patterson seems to be the type that fills a notebook a week with ideas, while the others just seem to be a bit more surgical with their strikes.

when patterson is at the top of his game hes fantastic though.... but with that volume there are definitely misses.

agreed that hood takes a much more storytelling approach - even his latest solo he acknowledges started as him writing a novel that the chapters just turned out to be better songs in a album.

Always preferred the Hood/Cooley partnership and dynamic... Dont get me wrong, I think Isbell wrote some good songs...

I definitely loved the live shows much more in the early days... never heard a band use the word butthole so much in one show...

DBT always came off as corny to me IMO. Never took them seriously.

Saw them live at the varsity and was bored to tears and left before the show was over.

No way... IMO, the gap was between the Majors and double A ball...

My take as well. Lucero is a good band, but DBT is on a whole other level. They are one of the true giants of the indie scene (as they say, it was a blessing and a curse). And I think DBT will continue forever, as its really the Hood/Cooley partnership with other musicians coming and going. That's the central dynamic of the band, and it always has been.

Isbell is certainly the best guy to move through the roster, but he was never that central core of DBT. And I can't imagine being bored at one of their shows, but to each his own. They are one of the best live bands I've ever seen, right up their with Fugazi at their peak.

Ben Nichols is a better, more consistent songwriter than Cooley to me.

Sweet Little Thing
Slow Dancing
Nights Like These
Ain't So Lonely
Old Sad Songs
Chain Link Fence
Fistful Of Tears
That Much Further West
Mine Tonight
Sad and Lonely
Across the River
Only One
Hate and Jealousy
Joining the Army
Tonight Ain't Gonna Be Good
Tears Don't Matter Much
Coming Home
When You Decided To Leave
Little Silver Heart
My Best Girl
Wandering Star
Dangerous Thing
Drink 'Till We're Gone
Raising Hell
Banks of the Arkansas
All Sewn Up
Wasted
Hold Fast
Better Than This
All These Love Songs
No Roses No More
It Gets the Worst at Night

Tell me where the bad songs are from that list

Okay, we get it. You make multiple posts in every DBT topic saying pretty much the same thing.

I like Lucero... I was talking in regards to the live show...

DBTs are superior to Lucero... they could both be singing nursery rhymes...
