I'm really looking forward to this series after HBO's mini-docutmentary special called Witness. I know the two are not connected at all. But, I got the same vibe watching some of the features on youtube.

quote:

Vice , airing at 11 p.m. Fridays beginning April 5, certainly delivers that, even if the stories they cover ultimately don't have a point other than something along the lines of, “Holy shite, this is crazy.”
That’s not to criticize Vice at all because the show, at least when it gets into the big issues (Pakistan vs. India, women trying to flee North Korea, the insanity that is political life in the Philippines -- stories featured in the first two episodes), certainly gives off the vibe that it’s trying a lot harder than its more well-heeled cousins at CNN and the networks.
And much of that perception is true. Yes, you’ll find more tattoos on the Vice correspondents than you will at, say, CBS, but there’s a base earnestness that convinces you pretty quickly that they’re not out in the world trying to play hipster journalist, they’re out in the world trying to enlighten people about how screwed up it is.

Same here. I really enjoyed some of their past documentaries, especially the North Korean one and General Butt Naked.

I watched "Click.Print.Gun" with my SO last night and was left intrigued about the whole situation. I don't think Vice on HBO will have too many episodes dealing with social issues in the US. But, it was still interesting nevertheless.

The Mexican Mormon war full length doc is also a good one.

They do it without trying to be all ironic and hip like Michael Moore does. They do pretty well at letting their subjects tell their own story without belittling them.

Bump because, damn. Just stumbled on this episode about China's f'd up empty cities and the aftermath of what just went down in Egypt.

Not that I didn't know of these things, but it's nice to see journalism alive somewhere these days. It's like Frontline with a personality. A lot of pixilated face interviews in both segments with people risking their lives to talk. Ima try and catch as many of these as they make.

pretty good comparison.

i still havent seen an episode of the HBO series that matches the better half of their online content. i know the show is still young, but i kinda wish they stuck to one story an episode.

still good stuff though.

it's a solid show for HBO, but it doesn't compare to the stuff they produce for the site.

I don't really get that vibe from them.

I mean, I know they are. I've read plenty of opinion stuff by Shane, but on the show and on their videos they don't really give a slant

imo of course

well the lense through which they view things are certainly from a prog/liberal slant, namely in social/cultural stories. they do a good job of mostly avoiding direct commentary on political issues
