"Use of +P and +P+ ammunition accelerates wear and reduces the service life

on the component parts of any pistol, including the P series pistols, and is not recommended."
Is this just legalese? It's right out my operators manual. I thought those hot rounds, assuming they're just referring to 9mm, had the same chamber pressures as my 357sig? I wonder what other stresses they're worried about?

Some pistols you can, with the associated accelerated wear. Some you can NOT.

My bodyguard .38 had it on the barrel and its also in the owners manual.

My 38 is +P. It will never wear out. I shoot regular rounds and keep +P in as protection rounds. Every now and then I'll shoot a +P just because.

I believe my m&p shield said it in the manual or on S&W website.

Said what? It is OK to shoot them, just expect accelerated wear?
Posted on 4/2/13 at 7:49 am to Gaston
I don't remember anything about accelerated wear, but it definitely said it was ok to shoot them. I only shoot one every so often, just have them in there for home defense because I never got around to buying other rounds.

Easiest way to find out

This. I don't use them for target shooting, but if my arse or anyone else's arse is on the line, I'm not concerned about wear. Call me a rebel.

Anytime you are putting more pressure on a gun wear will accelerate. Just like a boxer. They can only take so many punches, a gun can only take so many shots. It may take ten of thousands to wear it but wear is occurring.

It just seems random to me. They make a P2000 in 9mm and 357sig and then warn the 9mm owner not to shoot ammo with almost the same chamber pressures of the 357sig. It seems like the 357sig, shooting standard loads, would wear faster than the 9mm with +P+, so why warn the 9mm owner? It just seemed like legal talk since maybe HK doesn't trust all the +P+ loads out there.

+P just means the round is over standard pressures as observed by SAAMI (sp?). +P+ is just over that next threshold.
I have +p ammo loaded in all my guns. The easiest way to know if your gun can handle it is to contact the manufacturer. For the most part, most guns can. Cheaper ones like hi pernts and diamondbacks probably can't handle it if I had to guess.

I'd expect a P30 could eat them up, but that statement was taken directly from its manual.

I would imagine so too, but if ever in doubt, call the head honchos.

I've never understood the need for +P or +P+. Anybody?

Higher velocity = more boom per grain

It'll wear out. Any gun will wear out with enough rounds no matter what you feed it. Shooting higher pressure rounds is going to accelerate the wear regardless of the gun. The degree that it accelerates wear depends on the gun.

Lets be real, none of us really practice enough with the majority of our firearms to wear them out.

Stopping power and penetration. It's for self defense, not plinking.
