The Ultimate Wolf in Sheep's Clothing 1911 Discussion

So while discussing night sight options for my Colt today my gunsmith started a interesting conversation with me. What would be the ultimate "wolf in sheep's clothing" 1911? What I mean is the best of the best in aftermarket parts on the plainest possible frame? We discussed best bang for the buck and came up with a SR 1911 or Remington base model 1911. What say the OB?

It's the Ruger SR1911 no question. The base model Remington comes with no features other than GI basics.

Right. But Im talking about talking the plainest looking 1911 made and then gutting it to put top end components in it. Imagine a Nascar that looks like its stock little brother. You following me?

It would have to start with a Para or a Rock Island frame
No skeletonized trigger or hammer...

Gotcha, I'll say the STI Spartan

You're talking about which plain Jane, factory 1911 to dress up w/ accessories, correct? Depends on how much one wants to spend for the base model. If the goal is to have a completed model w/ as little spent on it as possible, I think one would be hard pressed to beat using a RIA or American Classic for the base gun. If one doensn't mind spending a little more for the base gun, I'd suggest the SA Mil Spec in addition to your Ruger 1911. The Remington 1911 hasn't excited me much to this point.

This is what I'm talking about. At a glance it's a bargain basement rig. Then you shoot it and it handles like a high end custom job.

RRA with a match barrel and aftermarket trigger group. Add a good set of sights if you can.

That's sort of what I'm working on ... on a 20 yr plan unfortunately. I bought a cheap 1991A1 at a gun show in the early 90's. My intent was a cheap frame/slide into which I could stuff everything out of the Wilson catalog. Haven't even started the stuffing part though.

I'm not talking about the cheapest canvas to start with per se. I'm fairly certain that almost all agree that the best bang for your buck out of the box 1911 (for the dough) is the Ruger. What I'm interested in doing is taking a vanilla 1911 and making it a great shooter by upgrading the stock component parts while keeping the "visual integrity" of a stock 1911.

A quick search on Bud's releaved this beauty.
Girsan MC1911-G2:

What you want is a sleeper 1911, looks like a pinto on the outside runs like an indy car on the inside. The bottom barrel 1911's would suffice for a canvas. The RIA or Girsan would be my choice.

The beauty is in its simplicity. This is what I'm talking about. Any 1911 snob would look down his nose at that. I'm going to do this project. Anybody can go out and buy a $1500 shooter.

My only criteria is that it's relatively plain looking and has a good frame to work with. What are some options?

I don't know about that. Just depends who one talks/listens to. One can find a lot of support on a number of other forums for guns other than the Ruger. I guess part of that depends on how much one values the finish of the gun.

It appears we're getting close to a consensus here gents.... and in one page no less!

Doc the only thing about the STI is the skeletonized trigger and forward frame serrations - did I just butcher the second part?

I'd have to sand a few spots down to bare metal and let them get a light surface rust on them.
Maybe the normal holster wear spots on the slide.
