Wasn't Datone Jones in a 34?

He'd be a nice 20s pick if we did trade back.

re: Another Trade Down Scenario

As NFL offenses increasingly turn toward the passing game, defensive coordinators are countering with hybrid defenders capable of lining up inside and out depending on the down and distance. As such, players like Jones, who has alternated between defensive tackle and defensive end over the past two seasons for the Bruins, offers great value to NFL teams featuring the 4-3 and 3-4 alignments, alike.
Jones caught the imagination of UCLA coaches early in his career, appearing in 10 games (and starting two) as a true freshman (15 tackles). He broke out a season later, registering 30 tackles, including 11 tackles for loss and four sacks while opponents focused their attention on the disruptive Brian Price and Akeem Ayers.

Rather than have his career take off in 2010 as hoped by the UCLA faithful, Jones was lost for the entire season after breaking his right foot in fall camp. He came back healthy but wasn't as productive as expected in 2011, posting 41 tackles with 6.5 tackles for loss and three sacks.

Unleashed by an aggressive defense implemented by new head coach Jim Mora, however, Jones emerged as one of the Pac-12's most productive defensive linemen as a senior, notching career highs in tackles (57), tackles for loss (17.5) and sacks (six) to earn all-conference honors.

re: Another Trade Down Scenario

I'm not saying you can't get good players in the later part of the draft, but I'm talking about great players.

Here are the draft spots for the NFL defensive players of the year for the last five years.
JJ Watts (11), Terrell Suggs (10), Troy Polamalu (16), Charles Woodson (4), James Harrison (UFA).

They were all choosen in the top half of the draft besides Harrison who wasn't choosen at all.

Here are the draft spots for the defensive NFC Pro Bowlers last year.

DE: 27, 126, 15, 2
DT: 4, 224, 9
OLB: 11, 26, 68, 17
ILB: 11, 9, UFA
CB: 4, 9, 35, UFA
FS: 14, 126, 133
SS: 64

9 of 22 were in the top half of the draft. That's a percentage of some sort.

Here are the draft spots for the defensive AFC Pro Bowlers last year.

DE: 11, 7, 126, 134, 135
DT: 12, 21, 6, 120, 108
OLB: 10, 2, 20, UFA
ILB: 26, 15
CB: 14, 7, 24
FS: 24, 37, UFA
SS: 16, 65

10 of 24 were in the top half of the draft. Yet another percentage.

I'm just saying there are a few guys who become pro bowlers in the 50s and 60s. A few in the hundreds and even a few that are undrafted. But a majority are in the top fistfull of picks.

And the great longtime players you build your defense around like Champ Bailey, Charles Woodson, Bruce Smith, Demarcus Ware, Deion Sanders, Brian Urlacher, Julius Pepper and todays guys like JJ Watts, Aldon Smith/Justin Smith, Patrick Willis, JPP, Haloti Ngata, Derrick Johnson and Derrelle Revis were all picked at 16 or below.

I want a great defensive player. A gamechanger. A stud. A pro bowler. An All Pro. Not just some guy we say, "well so and so is solid."

re: Another Trade Down Scenario

I guess I'm the only one who thinks the Saints are targeting an OT. Based on their FA mves so far, OT/NT ate main spot s that they haven't addressed.

I think if OT from Oklahoma falls they will scoop him up happily otherwise they will trade down & go after Fluker. Wildcard is the NT from Utah with heart condition. SP has said a few times that he doesn't like injury risks but that may be a smokescreen.

Last I read the heart condition was related to a virus/dehydration.

Not a fan of Fluker at all. I'd be ok if we could get Joeckel, Fisher or Johnson. I'd even be ok with drafting an OT in the 3rd or 4th round as we've done well picking offensive lineman late in the draft.

I just think Fluker is a poor man's version of Andre Smith.

I don't think Star or Jones fall that far, but I think we have a chance of getting them which I wouldn't complain about either.

Ill take Rhodes/Trufant in the 1st and Collins/Elam/Rambo in the 2nd if trading down is the route we go.

None of the Top 3 OTs will be available at #15. I'd bet a substantial amount of money on that.

After the Top 3 the next few, like Fluker, are RT only projections. I can't see another RT added to the corral with Strief, Brown, Harris, & Jones.

3rd Rd and down an OT would be no surprise though. I think a #75 Faulk or Armstead could compete for a starting spot with brown.

How about trading down for two #2's or a high #2 & #3 and taking Margus Hunt from SMU? 6'8" 280 lbs., 4.6 in the 40 and 35+ reps with 225 lbs. Dude is a MONSTER!

FIFY

If we draft him, he becomes the oldest lineman we have besides Will Smith and Bunkley.

He's already older than JJ Watts and Von Miller and Aldon Smith. By the time he gets our defensive system, it'll be time for him to retire.

Watch Hunt's "highlights" when SMU played Texas A&M. You'd swear it's Luke Joeckel highlights.

I hope he's off the Saints board completely.

How is that considered a "highlight" film? I saw him make one play on defense. Besides that, he's tall and can block kicks. Other than that, it's the same thing I've seen him do in other film. Be tall and stiff. He's the NFLs version of Adam Morrison.

cuz he said

-he was agreeing. Hunt has a world of potential but he is so far away in development he might not ever get there. 3rd Rd I'd guess, maybe 2nd Rd for someone with Al Davis blood.
