Microsoft doubling down on stupid with Windows Blue
Posted by jcole4lsu on 3/29/13 at 12:24 pm00
So in case you have been under a rock, M$ has decided to go with a "DLC" style annual add on to its major products starting with W8 and Office 2013.
The first of these add on's has been codenamed "blue" and is apparently working to make W8 look even more like Windows Phone. Yeah. Because if I wanted a mobile OS, I'd fricking look at my god damned phone and not my 24 inch computer screen.
Now they are, apparently, going to provide a couple of good updates such as snap features in metro UI and new sizes for the start screen apps.
However, there is this little nugget as well:
awesomeness. now we know (even though pretty much anyone with a brain figured it out) why the boot straight to desktop feature was removed entirely from retail version of W8 - even though it was in the RC - M$ has visions of no desktop at all.

More, but not all, of the settings in Control Panel have been ported to the Metro-based PC settings, yet another indication that the desktop environment is on the way out.

I don't think microsoft can force folks to abandon the desktop. Folks will just hold on to 7 if 8 gets rid of the desktop entirely. They can lead the market to water, but they can't make us drink.

I would also like to add..I wish all these phone makers would quit putting cameras on phones. If I wanted a camera I would use my fricking camera..Sheesh..everyone knows that using a camera on your cellphone will always be pointless and tivial and no one will ever use it for serious reasons or ever accept it.

I see Microsoft has gone with EA's model of pay for features that should have been in from the start. I'm sure that's going to work out spectacularly.

this was actually my initial impression as well

Sad to see this happening. I think Windows 9 will tell us how successful MS was in this anti-desktop effort.
Next will be Intel moving to only sell BGA chips, and for every PC game to just be a rushed console port.

It's the same update paradigm employed by Apple and Google.
Both Apple and Google issue annualized updates for their OS's. Granted, they aren't charging users to update their mobile operating systems, but I imagine upgrading to Blue (and future versions of Windows) will cost around $15, which would mirror how Apple handles updates with OSX. I think this is the right direction for Windows.
With that said, however, Windows 8 is an irrevocable mess.

One of these has already happened. . .hint: it's the scary one.

I read the article about the changes and from the changes I don't see any indication whatsoever that the desktop would disappear.
They simply added some things to the start screen to make it easier to get around.
That in and of itself is NO indication they would remove the desktop. Seems like someone stirring shite just to stir shite up.

Either way I will stay on 7 forever if I have too.

I'll probably stick with my trend of skipping one major windows release before upgrading. Went from 3.1 to 98 to XP to Win7.
